Natural disasters test infrastructure long before recovery begins. Hurricanes, flooding, and wildfires can all weaken the ground systems that roads, slopes, drainage channels, and other critical assets depend on.

Geosynthetics help communities prepare by strengthening weak soils, managing water, controlling erosion, and supporting infrastructure performance before, during, and after severe events.

They play an important role in helping reduce damage, extend service life, and improve long-term resilience.

The orange and blue curves in these charts may look close, but they do not tell the same performance story.

MIRAFI® RS380i, shown in orange, demonstrates a greater percentage of smaller pore openings than Geosynthetic B, shown in blue. This distinction is important in roadway applications where geosynthetics are used to help separate fine-grained subgrades from the aggregate base course.

Why does that matter?

When fines migrate into the aggregate base, the base course can lose stiffness and become more vulnerable to rutting, deformation and long-term pavement distress. A product with a more favorable pore size distribution can help reduce that risk by retaining a wider range of fine particles.

The takeaway is simple: products that look similar by apparent opening size (AOS) may not perform the same when pore size distribution is considered.

Soft soils present significant risks to infrastructure due to low strength and high compressibility. This article explains how geotextiles improve stabilization by enhancing load distribution, preventing contamination, and managing moisture to support long-term performance.

With the countdown to 13th International Conference on Geosynthetics (13 ICG) officially on, we continue to highlight the Solmax experts contributing to the technical programme.

Next up: Rich Sack, who will present “Influence of a Woven Moisture Management Geosynthetic on Unsaturated Soil Behaviour in Long-Life Pavement Foundations.”

His presentation will examine the role of moisture management geosynthetics in influencing unsaturated soil behaviour and supporting long-life pavement foundation performance.

Visit at Booth 601 to connect with our team and discuss developments in geosynthetics, pavement engineering and moisture management.

We look forward to connecting with the geosynthetics community in Montréal.
