INSIGHT FROM OUR FOUNDER

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀.

They started as a phone call about a process that wasn’t working.

No mention of SR&ED. No mention of tax credits.

Just an engineer trying to figure out why a line kept underperforming.

We got involved to help solve it.

Somewhere in month four, someone on our side said: you know this is exactly what qualifies, right?

That’s not a coincidence. It’s the model working as intended.

When you show up for the problem first, the eligible work finds itself.

When you show up for the claim first, you’re always a step behind — asking people to remember uncertainty they’ve already resolved.

Every claim starts somewhere. We’d just rather it start with the work.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗤4.

If your SR&ED work for this fiscal year is still living in people’s heads instead of on paper, here’s what that actually costs you — not in March, right now.

❌ Technical details fade fast. Ninety days from now, “we tried three approaches” becomes “we tried a few things.”
❌ The engineer who solved it might be on a different project, or gone.
❌ Costs tied to development work get buried in general categories once the year closes.

None of that is fixable in one meeting in February.

Some of it is very fixable in October.
🔹 A short walk-through of what’s shipped or changed since January
🔹 Flagging which of it was actually uncertain, not just busy
🔹 Getting it written down while the people who did it still remember doing it

You don’t need a finished claim right now.

You need the ten minutes it takes to stop the details from disappearing.

🚨 New AI Funding Opportunity for Canadian Businesses

The Government of Canada has expanded the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII) with an additional $500 million over five years, bringing the initiative's total federal funding to $700 million.

RAII is designed to help businesses adopt and integrate AI, improve productivity and competitiveness, and help Canadian AI companies commercialize and scale their technologies.

For Southern Ontario manufacturers in particular, this is worth paying attention to. Manufacturing and robotics are specifically identified among the sectors where the expanded initiative will focus support.

📅 FedDev Ontario intake: October 13, 2026 to January 19, 2027
📅 Earlier application date: November 24, 2026 for proposed projects with eligible costs beginning before March 31, 2027.

Eligible businesses may receive government financing of up to 50% of eligible project costs, typically through interest-free, repayable contributions.

In Southern Ontario, the minimum funding request is $125,000, which generally corresponds to a project with at least $250,000 in eligible costs when funded at the maximum 50% level.

The real opportunity is not AI for AI's sake. It is using AI to solve measurable business and engineering problems, improve productivity, strengthen manufacturing operations and build competitive advantage.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁.

Not “how big is the claim likely to be.”

“Are they going to let us in?”

Because collaboration only works if the door’s actually open.
🔹 Will their engineers talk to us mid-project, not just at year-end?
🔹 Will we get access to the shop floor, not just a spreadsheet?
🔹 Is leadership looking for a partner, or a line item?

Some companies want exactly what we do. Some genuinely just want the cheapest invoice.

Both are fine businesses to run. They’re just not the same client.

We’d rather turn down a bigger claim than take on a relationship that’s consultation dressed up as collaboration.

It’s a smaller list. It’s a better one.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲.

So what’s happening the other ten?

For a lot of firms: nothing. That’s the point of the annual model.

Here’s what a normal month looks like on our side, mid-year:
🔧 Walking the floor with an engineer to look at a process change
🔧 Sitting in on a design review to catch eligible work before it’s finished, not after
🔧 Flagging a scrap-rate problem that turns out to be a documentation opportunity, not just a cost
🔧 A quick call because someone tried something new and wasn’t sure if it “counted”

None of that shows up on an invoice in July.

All of it shows up in the claim in March.

They’re measured in years.

A one-year engagement tells you almost nothing about whether the work was any good.

A five-year one tells you everything.
🔹 Did the claim get easier to build, year over year?
🔹 Did the company start flagging eligible work themselves, before we even asked?
🔹 Did the relationship survive a bad year — a smaller claim, a tighter budget, a CRA review?

Most SR&ED firms are built to win the next twelve months.

We built Pioneer to still be useful in year six.

That means fewer clients than some of our competitors.

It also means the ones we have, we actually know.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗥𝗔 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺:

A letter arrives.

Sometimes it’s a clarifying question. Sometimes it’s a full technical review with a site visit.

Either way, someone has to answer for the work.
📞 Explain what was uncertain
📞 Walk through what was tried and what failed
📞 Justify the hours, the costs, the technical narrative

Here’s the part most companies don’t think about until it happens:

If the consultant who wrote the claim wasn’t actually there for the work, they’re guessing right alongside you.

That’s the gap.

Pioneer sits in on these reviews because we were already in the room — for the process changes, the failed first attempts, the fixture that didn’t fit.

We’re not reconstructing a story from a spreadsheet.
We’re explaining work we watched happen.

That’s usually the difference a CRA reviewer can tell within the first five minutes.

𝗜 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆.
Show up, gather the paperwork, write the claim, leave.
It’s the standard model. It’s also the easy one.
For the consultant, anyway.
Early on, a client got a CRA review letter in February — six months after we’d filed.
I remember the question I asked myself before I picked up the phone:
Do I actually remember this project and the details well enough to defend it?
I did. Barely.
That’s the moment the model changed for me.
Not because collaboration sounds better in a LinkedIn post.
Because consultation doesn’t hold up when someone asks a hard question eight months later.
So Pioneer stopped operating like a consultant.
We started operating like part of the clients team.
🔹 On site, understanding the work
🔹 Documenting as it happens, not reconstructing it later
🔹 Still on the phone and on-site when CRA calls — because we were there for the work, not just the write-up
It’s slower to set up. It’s harder to scale.
It’s also the only version of this business I’d want to run.

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗥&𝗘𝗗 / “𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽” 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀:

Someone shows up twice a year.

📄 Once to collect your documents.

💰 Once to send you an invoice.

And in between?

Silence.

If CRA has questions, you’re often on your own — or paying extra to get them answered.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The manufacturers who get the most out of SR&ED aren’t necessarily the ones who found the cheapest consultant.

They’re the ones whose consultant:
🔹 Understands what actually happens on the shop floor
🔹 Works with the team throughout the year
🔹 Identifies eligible work as it happens
🔹 Helps build the documentation around the work
🔹 Stays involved when CRA asks questions
🔹 Doesn’t disappear after the claim is submitted

𝗦𝗥&𝗘𝗗 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲.

It should be part of the conversation around your R&D, process improvements and product development.

So here’s a real question:

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗦𝗥&𝗘𝗗 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲…
Which kind did you get?
And which kind would you actually want?
