to the Hydro One Operations Centre and Distribution Warehouse expansion.

This project delivered a 140,000 sq. ft. distribution warehouse and a 30,000 sq. ft. operations centre, strengthening Hydro One’s regional operations with modern, long-lasting infrastructure.

Steelcon’s scope included the supply and installation of structural steel, joists, metal deck, and miscellaneous metals. The use of galvanized structural steel throughout the project ensured enhanced durability and long-term performance for the exposed structure.

With both facilities constructed at the same time, success depended on detailed planning and seamless coordination between Steelcon’s shop, site, and project management teams. Sequenced material deliveries and a dedicated finishing crew working alongside the er****on team helped maintain a continuous workflow, maximizing productivity, and keeping the project on schedule.

This project is a strong example of collaboration, planning, and ex*****on delivering reliable steel solutions for critical infrastructure within a tight timeline.

SIN Column Series: The Jumbo HSS Problem

As the use of jumbo and super jumbo HSS sections continues to increase, availability and rolling schedules have also become a challenge.

Even when a section meets the design requirements, procurement timelines may impact the project schedule. SIN Columns offers an alternative.

By utilizing a built-up plated section, SIN Column can be engineered to achieve equivalent structural properties while offering greater flexibility in sourcing and fabrication.

The result is improved availability, shorter fabrication timelines, and potential cost savings compared to waiting for a specific jumbo section to become available.

Steelcon is proud to have supported the construction of the second building at Carttera's Avonhead Industrial Campus in Mississauga, Ontario. The 378,000 sq. ft. industrial warehouse marks the second phase of the campus development, designed as part of a Zero Carbon Design project targeting LEED Gold certification.

Steelcon's scope includes the design and installation of structural steel, joists, canopy framing, and roof opening steel supports. The use of SIN Beam technology provides a value-engineered solution by reducing overall steel weight while maintaining structural performance. Manufacturing both the SIN Beam and joists in-house also provided greater control over fabrication, material flow, and delivery, helping keep steel arriving on site in step with the project's construction schedule.

To support an efficient er****on sequence, the building was divided into 13 sections, allowing crews to maintain steady progress through coordinated planning, deliveries, and installation.

SIN Column Series: Connections Matter

An innovative structural solution is only valuable if it can be connected efficiently. Because SIN Column utilizes a corrugated web, engineers often assume they require unconventional connection details.

In reality, SIN Column can utilize many of the same connection concepts used with conventional steel construction.

Steelcon has developed connection details that allows SIN Column to integrate with conventional column connection approaches, including applications where weak-axis connections are required without relying on direct attachment to the corrugated web.

These details provide engineers with practical solutions while preserving the structural and material efficiency benefits of SIN column.

Like any structural system, connection design must suit the application. The goal is not to reinvent connection design, but to make SIN Column a practical option within familiar steel design principles.

This month, we’re highlighting Alexandra De La Cruz, a Project Manager whose diverse experience and willingness to embrace new challenges have helped shape her career at Steelcon.

Beginning her journey in shop production before transitioning into project management, Alexandra brings a well-rounded perspective to every project. Her understanding of fabrication, combined with her collaborative approach and problem solving, allows her to successfully guide projects to completion.

Here’s what she had to say about her journey:

What attracted you to Steelcon, and how has your role evolved since you joined?

“What attracted me to Steelcon was its reputation for innovation and willingness to take on challenging projects. I knew it would be an environment where I could learn and grow. I started on the shop production side, where I gained valuable insight into our fabrication processes, before transitioning into Project Management. Today, I oversee projects from start to finish, and that production background has given me a strong understanding of how every stage comes together”

Can you share a decision that significantly influenced your career path?

“One big decision was stepping outside of my comfort zone and moving into Project Management. It changed my perspective on how to deliver a successful project, and I quickly learned that project management isn’t just about schedules and budgets, but building strong relationships, communicating effectively, and solving problems in real time. That experience has helped me grow both professionally and personally”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

“The fast-paced nature of the role. Every day brings a new challenge, whether it’s coordinating with different teams or finding solutions to unexpected issues. No two days are ever the same, and that’s what makes the role so rewarding.”

Can you share a project you’re proud of, and what made it meaningful to you?

“Our New Cold Atlanta project. It came with tight timelines and unexpected hurdles, and navigating those while keeping the project moving forward. Which required strong teamwork, and collaboration across departments. Seeing the project come together despite those challenges made it especially rewarding.”

What skills have been most valuable in your role?

“My shop production background is one of my biggest strengths as it gives me a practical understanding of how early decisions impact the entire project. Strong time management and conflict resolution skills are essential too, since the role means balancing multiple priorities while staying organized and communicating clearly.”

SIN Column Series: Beyond Gravity Applications

While columns are thought of primarily as axial load-carrying members, SIN Column can be used for much more than gravity applications.

SIN Column is also suitable for wind column and moment-resisting frame applications, where strength, stiffness, and section geometry play a critical role in overall structural performance.

Because SIN Column is fabricated as built-up sections, they offer the flexibility to achieve the required section depth, bending strength, and stiffness of conventional column sections.

This allows our engineers to tailor a member to the demands of the structure rather than being limited to available rolled shapes.

The result is a versatile column solution that can be optimized for gravity loads, lateral loads, or a combination of both.

Steel is going up on this 384,437 sq. ft. industrial warehouse as Steelcon continues to advance er****on on this large-scale Greater Toronto Area project.

Steelcon’s scope of work included the supply and installation of structural steel, metal deck, and joists. The project required thoughtful coordination and engineering collaboration to maximize structural efficiency across the building's long spans.

As part of the project's value engineering strategy, SIN Columns were incorporated to handle significant wind and bending loads, deliver deeper and stronger sections without unnecessary weight, and enhance seismic performance at key expansion joints, helping support overall schedule and cost objectives.

Close collaboration between Steelcon, the client, and the structural engineering team has remained essential throughout both the design and construction phases as progress continues on site.

SIN Column Series: How SIN Column Carries Load

One of the first questions engineers may ask when evaluating SIN Column is how they behave under axial compression.

In gravity applications, SIN Column behaves similarly to conventional wide fl**ge sections.

The majority of the axial load is carried through the fl**ges, which represent the predominant portion of the cross-sectional area. This allows material to be concentrated where it contributes most effectively to the column's structural performance.

The result is a column that can achieve the required strength and stiffness while optimizing material utilization. The approach is simple: place material where it works hardest and eliminate it where it doesn't. This creates opportunities for more efficient steel design while maintaining the performance required for gravity applications.

Steelcon introduced corrugated web beams to the North American market more than 10 years ago, and since then we've delivered more than 20 million square feet of SIN Beam projects.

As a result, most engineers know SIN as a beam solution, but the principles behind SIN members extend beyond horizontal applications.
