Steel is going up on this 132,000 sq. ft. mission critical facility as Steelcon continues to advance er****on on this complex two-storey project.

Designed using a combination of SIN Beam, structural steel, and metal deck systems, the project required detailed coordination and phased er****on planning due to tight site conditions and ongoing activity from multiple trades across the site.

As part of the project’s value engineering strategy, SIN Beam was incorporated to achieve longer spans, improve structural efficiency, and help support overall schedule and cost objectives. Due to the significant roof loading requirements and rooftop chiller platform, the structure was engineered without conventional joist systems, utilizing a customized framing solution tailored to the project’s demands.

Close collaboration between Steelcon, the client, and the structural engineering team has remained essential throughout both the design and construction phases as progress continues on site.

This month, we’re highlighting David Coull, a dedicated member of our shop team whose journey at Steelcon reflects the value of hard work, growth, and continuous learning.

Since joining, David has taken on new challenges and steadily advanced through multiple roles from material sorting to detailing, and now as a Machine Operator. His willingness to learn and adapt has helped him build a strong foundation within the Steelcon team.

Here’s what he had to say about his Steelcon journey:

What attracted you to Steelcon, and how has your role evolved since you joined?

"I originally joined Steelcon through a family connection. A friend of my dad’s mentioned that the company was hiring and felt I would be a good fit for the team. Since starting at Steelcon, my role has evolved quite a bit. I began as a Material Sorter, then moved into material detailing, and eventually worked my way into machine operation. Each role gave me the opportunity to learn something new and continue developing my skills within the company."

Can you share a moment or decision that significantly influenced your career path?

"One of the biggest moments for me was when I first started at Steelcon and was asked where I saw myself within the company long-term. I mentioned that I was interested in machine operation, and from that point on, I was given opportunities and support to help me work toward that goal. Having leaders who encouraged my growth and trusted me with new responsibilities played a big role in shaping my career path."

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

"What I enjoy most about my current role is the variety and flexibility that comes with it. Compared to when I first started, I feel much more confident and comfortable in my position. I also enjoy being able to operate multiple machines rather than being limited to one specific task. It keeps the work interesting and gives me the opportunity to continue building my experience across different areas of the shop."

Can you share an achievement here that you’re especially proud of, and what made it meaningful to you?

"One achievement I’m especially proud of is being able to learn the machines I operate as quickly as I did. When I first saw the role, it seemed intimidating because of the level of skill and responsibility involved. Being able to overcome that challenge, gain confidence, and become comfortable operating the equipment has been very rewarding and showed me how much I’ve grown since joining Steelcon."

to the RER Stouffville Stations Expansion in Toronto, ON, a project that delivered critical infrastructure upgrades along the GO Transit Stouffville corridor, enhancing capacity and improving the commuter experience with new amenities.

Steelcon’s scope of work included the supply and installation of structural steel and metal deck for upgrades to three GO stations on the Stouffville corridor, as well as the supply and installation of the 50-metre pedestrian bridges at Milliken Station, crossing over the new Steeles Avenue East grade separation.

The bridges were pre-assembled on site and lifted safely into place using a 900-ton crane. This complex operation required detailed planning and close coordination, including temporary track and road closures, all executed within a tight scheduled window. Working alongside an active rail corridor, much of the construction took place during night shifts to minimize disruption, with a strong focus on safety, precision, and quality throughout.

This project is great example of collaboration and expertise coming together to support the continued growth of transit infrastructure across the GTA.

Steelcon’s work is nearing completion on a new 156,233 sq. ft., two-storey industrial facility featuring an integrated office area and crane systems to support advanced manufacturing operations.

Steelcon was engaged as the design builder for the shop and warehouse steel superstructure and as a design assist partner for the office area. The scope included the supply and installation of structural steel, SIN Beams, joists, miscellaneous metals, and metal deck. Early involvement in the design stage enabled the in house design team to implement value engineering strategies that improved efficiency across the building’s structural system.

This included the use of SIN Beam for material optimization and improved fabrication efficiency, supporting project performance goals. With engineering and fabrication working closely in-house, we streamlined coordination and maintained strong control over design changes and production.

With evolving site requirements and tight timelines, particularly at interfaces with cast-in-place concrete and complex machinery, our team accelerated fabrication and optimized shop workflows to stay aligned with construction progress. Through ongoing coordination with the general contractor and trade partners, Steelcon continued to support efficient ex*****on and keep the project on track for its eventual completion.
