Here's how a dedicated BBQ gas line actually works:

1️⃣ — Assessment
A licensed gas fitter looks at your existing gas service, meter capacity, and the path from the line to your outdoor space. Most homes in Vernon and Kelowna already have the capacity.

2️⃣ — Permit + Install
This is not a DIY project — gas line work requires a permit and a licensed gas fitter. The install itself is typically straightforward: run the line, install a shutoff valve, connect the fitting.

3️⃣ — Done
No tanks. No refills. Turn the valve, light the grill.
The whole process usually takes a few hours. It's cleaner, more convenient, and depending on propane prices, often pays for itself over a few seasons.

Here's the framework most techs use to make that call.

Repair makes sense when:
🔹 The unit is under 8–10 years old
🔹 The repair is minor and isolated (capacitor, contactor, sensor)
🔹 The cost is well under 50% of a replacement quote
🔹 The system has been maintained and runs efficiently otherwise

Replacement makes sense when:
🔹 Repair costs are stacking up year over year
🔹 The system uses R-22 refrigerant (no longer manufactured)
🔹 Efficiency ratings are well below current standards — newer units cost significantly less to run
🔹You're planning to stay in the home 5+ more years

⚠️ Repair cost is more than half the price of a new unit
⚠️ Energy bills have been creeping up without explanation
⚠️ It struggles to hold temperature on hot days
⚠️ Uneven cooling — some rooms fine, others not
⚠️ It's making sounds it didn't make before
⚠️ Refrigerant type is R-22 (discontinued — refills are expensive and getting harder to find)
