This Passive House homeowner is committed to a zero-carbon lifestyle. A Passive House is a strict, international building standard focused on ultra-low energy use, high comfort, and a small carbon footprint. This home uses about 90% less energy for heating and cooling than a traditional home.

Add in an 8 kW ground-mount solar system positioned due south, and this mass timber home has been net-positive since March — exporting 20–30 kWh back to the grid every day.

This is the second project we've completed for this homeowner and we couldn't be happier with the results.

New Project: Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club

The Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club has installed 40 solar panels and 18 kWh of battery storage, making it one of the first community recreation clubs on Vancouver Island to invest in clean energy independence. Hakai Energy Solutions, a SkyFire Energy Company, designed and installed the full system, including battery storage to keep the lights on during winter outages.

On the engagement, Hakai founder, Jason Jackson, noted, "Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club is setting an example for clubs and organizations across Vancouver Island that clean, local energy is a smart investment in the future of their community."

BC Hydro Is Changing Net Metering. Here's What It Means for You.

Effective July 1, 2026, BC Hydro is transitioning to a new self-generation service rate (also known as net billing) for customers receiving solar rebates and all new solar customers.

Powering Sustainability at the University of Victoria

The University of Victoria is taking another major step toward sustainability with a solar installation at the Engineering and Computer Science Building (ECS) and its expansion, along with a future system planned for the new High Bay Research and Structures Lab (HBRSL), which is currently under construction.

Hakai Energy Solutions has completed the installation of 177 high-efficiency solar modules on the Engineering and Computer Science Building. This system will generate clean electricity to support the university’s campus energy strategy, reduce operational costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Looking ahead, we will be installing an additional ~225 kW DC capacity on the ECS Expansion & High Bay Research and Structures Lab once construction is complete. This additional solar includes a BIPV canopy on the ECS Expansion and a vertical façade solar installation on the High Bay facility.

Beyond clean energy generation, the project also serves as a hands-on educational resource. Students have opportunities to observe and analyze system performance, gaining practical insights into renewable energy systems, energy efficiency, and sustainability in action. The installation helps transform campus infrastructure into a living laboratory for applied learning.
