FTC PMR Phoenix Wins Design Award at Canada Cup of Robotics! 🏆🌟

This past week Port Moody Robotics FTC Team #23430 PMR Phoenix travelled to Brock University in St. Catherines Ontario to represent BC in the premiere Canada Cup of Robotics! 🤖

PMR Phoenix battled through qualification rounds, (even dealt with a small electrical fire in their robot) and teamed up with Team for playoffs before finishing in 23rd out of 39th place!

To top off their PMR Phoenix was awarded the FTC Design Award for their robot design! As described during the award ceremonies, "using odometry positioning and an auto-rotating turret, this team knew where their nest is and how to find their goal. With strong engineering and clear purpose, this team rises from the ashes and turns it into carbon fibre." 🎖️

Congrats to PMR Phoenix for this amazing achievement! Looking forward to see what you'll design for the upcoming FIRST Canopy season! ♥️🌿

🌊 Happy !

Did you know that critical ocean conservation work is done by robots? From tracking marine life and coral growth to exploring and mapping the deepest parts of the ocean, robotics is at the forefront of protecting our blue planet.

During last year's ocean themed FIRST Dive season, students were challenged to engineer solutions for restoring vibrant reefs, fostering collaboration, and make waves of impact in their communities! Those same skills are the exact tools the next generation of marine scientists and engineers will use to help save our oceans! 🛠️🤖

FIRST Robotics BC has been chosen to select BC students from FRC or FTC teams to represent Team Canada at the 2026 FIRST Global Challenge in Incheon, Korea this October!

What's the FIRST Global Challenge you ask? It's an Olympics-style, international robotics competition that takes place in a different country each year and teams from each nation are invited to send a team to build and program a competition robot!

This year, teams will harness creativity, engineering, and bold new ideas to spark breakthroughs in wildfire prevention, mitigation, and recovery. Through hands-on engineering and strategic gameplay, students will explore how technology can help reduce the risk and impact of fires, protect communities, and support environmental resilience in a warming world.

FIRST Robotics BC is pleased to announce that Michelle Kitchen has been named Executive Director to lead the organization into a new growth phase.

Michelle is an accomplished strategic and operational leader with experience in leading mission-driven non-profit organizations. Prior, she held the role of CEO of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, a non-profit with a mission to inspire and educate youth and the community at large into physical literacy and sport. As the ambassador and spokesperson of the Hall, she led new growth strategies, partnership development, fundraising and donor strategies, corporate profile and community engagement.

A key achievement was the province-wide expansion of the “Hero in You” educational program, alongside the launch of the world’s first fully immersive digital Indigenous Sport Gallery—advancing Truth and Reconciliation and expanding access to underserved and equity-seeking communities.

Michelle also previously served non-profit Dress for Success Vancouver, where she led a transformative brand repositioning that significantly increased revenue and funding to further the mission to help women and gender-diverse individuals realize their highest potential and achieve economic independence. With an extensive background in Marketing, Michelle was at the helm of multiple global and national marketing agencies servicing private and public organizations and overseeing high performing cross-functional teams.

Throughout her career she built and scaled brands in highly competitive categories, including AirMiles, BCIT, BELL, Destination Canada, ING Direct, Netflix, Nordstrom, McDonald’s, Nabisco, Rocky Mountaineer, TELUS, UBC and Volkswagen to name a few.
