We say goodbye to Singapore!
We loved our time there alongside our friends from SEAPA Japan . Thank you to all who stopped by to chat and to those who attended our presentation. We love reconnecting with colleagues, so if you spot us at another event, stop by to chat. We are always open to talking about algae đź’š

We are thrilled to announce that Industrial Plankton is heading to Singapore for World Aquaculture 2026, taking place from February 16–19! A major highlight for us this year is our seaweed biologist, Marcus Lin, participating in a special panel hosted by . He will be presenting on the effects of fragmentation on free-living conchocelis (Pyropia yezoensis) in seaweed bioreactors for commercial laver seeding.

May 10th, we celebrate National Shrimp Day. But for the aquaculture industry, it’s about more than just recipes; it's about understanding the biology of the shrimp we eat.

A common question in hatchery management is: how often do shrimp reproduce? While this varies by species, the success of each cycle depends on the larvae's first meal. The shrimp we eat rely on a precise nutrient-dense diet of microalgae, like Chaetoceros or Thalassiosira, to grow in the earliest stages.

High-density, biosecure algae (like those produced in our PBRs) help these larvae survive and become the shrimp found on our dinner tables.

This Shrimp Day, let’s focus on the science that makes the harvest possible.

We are excited to join researchers, Indigenous leaders, and industry professionals at the inaugural Pacific Seaweed Summit in Campbell River! This event is a vital opportunity for all of us to come together and build a responsible foundation for the seaweed sector.

Stop by to chat with one of our Seaweed Biologists. We want to hear about your work! Whether you are diving into the complexities of gametophyte lifecycle management or developing new strategies for large-scale seed restoration. Understanding these biological intricacies is essential for long-term ocean stewardship.

What are the biggest technical hurdles your team is facing this season?

Another successful installation at the Aquatron Laboratory! đź’Ş

We are proud to support Dalhousie University with a major upgrade featuring four new Industrial Plankton PBRs. This technology ensures their team has a consistent, biosecure supply of high-density algae for advancing their shellfish research.

Congratulations to the Aquatron team on this exciting facility expansion!

This World Water Day, we are looking beyond the surface at how our work addresses a primary environmental crisis: CO2 levels and ocean acidification.

While Canada holds nearly 20% of the world’s freshwater, our ocean health depends on how we manage resources on land. With the average Canadian using 215 L of water per day, this day reminds us that water security and climate resilience are linked.

This observance is essential because it raises global awareness for the 2.2 billion people currently living without access to safe water. It serves as a critical call to action to manage freshwater sustainably, ensuring the biodiversity and water quality necessary for future generations.

We know that kelp forests alone cannot solve this, but they are a vital piece of a much larger puzzle. They are the "blue lungs" of our coastlines, acting as a primary defence for biodiversity and a natural sink for carbon.

Restoring these ecosystems at the pace the planet requires means moving from small, fragmented efforts to a vision of restoration at scale. It’s about creating a reliable foundation so that our oceans can do what they do best: support life and balance our atmosphere.

How is your organization contributing to a water-resilient and carbon-neutral future?

Kelp forests have nearly disappeared along parts of the North American west coast!!

With the imminent threat of anthropogenic stressors, such as rising ocean temperatures and severe marine storms, that uproot mature kelp. Represents a growing loss of essential ecosystem functions, coastal photosynthesis and nutrient and carbon cycling in the ocean. These are some of the Vancouver Island teams rescuing this ecosystem:

👉 The Kelp Rescue Initiative:
Non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting British Columbia's kelp forest through research, partnerships, and public education. They not only share the vital role these underwater forests play in coastal ecosystems, but also knowledge and resources on kelp health and restoration techniques.

👉 Ocean Wise:
Global conservation organization whose mission is to build communities that take meaningful action to protect and restore our ocean. Part of their multiple projects is kelp forest restoration, monitoring, and nursery. They work with kelp farmers, indigenous groups, and scientists to protect and restore these critical marine ecosystems, like West Coast Kelp.

👉 West Coast Kelp:
Leader in kelp cultivation and restoration on the west coast of Vancouver Island. They collaborate with different partners to implement projects that meet ecological goals and habitat offset objectives. Within their services for kelp forest restoration and marine habitat enhancement, they provide solutions tailored to a wide range of restoration initiatives.
