Trades apprentices typically begin earning between $35,000 to $40,000 annually, increasing to $55,000 to $70,000 by their early 20s, and reaching over $85,000 as journeymen. In contrast, university students may incur debt of $80,000 to $100,000 over four years, potentially graduating without income while tradespeople earn approximately $160,000 to $200,000 during that period.

Moreover, career progression in trades is often misunderstood; many skilled trades workers advance to leadership roles such as foremen or project managers. The demand for trades is expected to surge, with a projected shortage of over 700,000 skilled workers in Canada by 2030 due to retirements and growing infrastructure needs.
