💡Finding new homes for our power generation! 💡

This summer, Diavik worked with salvage contractor Lenmark Industries to remove and repurpose the massive diesel generators from one of our powerhouses, as we require less power capacity on site during closure.

Each generator weighs approximately 160,000 pounds. They were carefully removed from the powerhouse and packed up to be shipped off site.

Lenmark is working to find the generators a new home, generating power for another asset, instead of getting scrapped.

These reused generators represent approximately 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions avoided, when compared to buying replacement assets – equivalent to removing over 200 cars from the road for a year!

The now-empty powerhouse has been demolished and final cleanup is in progress.

Check out the video to see our teams in action as they remove and prep the generators for their new homes.

🔨 Tools for schools (and the Coast Guard Auxillary!) 🔧 🧰

Over the past several months, Diavik team members have been identifying tools no longer needed at site and creating packages for institutions across the Northwest Territories.

Thanks to their efforts, approximately 20 pallets of tools have either already been donated - or are in the process of being delivered - to school shop programs and other groups to be reused. Those groups include Aurora College, Yellowknife's Sir John Franklin and St. Patrick's High Schools, Hay River's Diamond Jenness Secondary School (pictured), and the Coast Guard Auxillary.

The second photo, taken during our tool drop off to the Coast Guard, is of the boat Diavik Discovery - a Coast Guard rescue boat previously donated by Diavik.

We're proud to support these organizations and continue to look for opportunities to reuse materials from site across the North as our closure operations continue.

Last night in Kugluktuk, Nunavut, we were proud to sign a closure agreement with the Kitikmeot Inuit Association related to Diavik's closure.

The KIA and DDMI first signed a Participation Agreement related to the operations of Diavik Diamond Mine in 2001. This Closure Agreement marks a commitment to that ongoing partnership through the mine’s closure and reclamation.

The agreement commits to assisting the KIA in responding to the socio-economic impacts of Diavik’s closure through financial investment, including funding for scholarships and cultural programs. It also reaffirms commitments to employment, training, and business opportunities through closure, and defines the long-term relationship between the KIA and DDMI.

We're proud to continue our support of Run for Our Lives, and their mission of purchasing cancer equipment at Stanton Territorial Hospital.

✨ A Very Special Premium Platinum Sponsor Thank You ✨

Just when we thought Diavik Diamond Mine's remarkable chapter of support for the Run for Our Lives CIBC Mud Run might be coming to a close, they surprised us with an incredibly generous $10,000 donation! 💜💎🩵

As Diavik transitions from production into remediation, this unexpected gift means more to us than we can adequately express.

For more than two decades, Rio Tinto Diavik Diamond Mine has stood alongside Run for Our Lives, providing extraordinary support for our fundraising efforts and helping us make a difference in cancer care in the North. Their longstanding commitment and generosity have left a lasting impact on our event, our organization and the patients and families we support.

To everyone at Diavik, past and present: thank you for the many years you have supported our work—and for surprising us once again with this very special gift. We are deeply grateful. 🩵🫶💜

🌱 Traditional Knowledge informing closure 🌱

Earlier this summer, we were pleased to welcome representatives from Indigenous Government partners to Diavik for a week-long visit as part of our Traditional Knowledge Monitoring Program.

Participants toured the site and provided advice and feedback on closure progress and plans for upcoming site reclamation activities. This visit focused on revegetation - the input received will help our teams determine how to prepare roadways and other areas to promote natural revegetation once cleanup is complete.

Our Traditional Knowledge Monitoring Plan continues to develop, with continuous input from Indigenous Government partners. Thank you to all the participants from this summer's visit for sharing your time and knowledge!

🔋💨☀️ Battery storage system – online 🔋💨☀️

Diavik has recently completed commissioning a 4.4 MW battery storage system, which will help us maximize our renewable energy usage through closure.

The system allows for the storage of energy from our wind and solar plants, giving us the ability to capture and deploy it as needed. It also means that at times during closure operations, our site will run on 100% renewable power.

The system is projected to reduce diesel consumption at site by 4.5 million litres and eliminate 12,800 tons of CO2 emissions between now and the end of 2028.

Once complete at site, the battery can be relocated post-closure along with Diavik’s solar infrastructure.
