Meet Kristoffer Hughes, a mortuary veteran now leading calls to introduce human composting—also known as terramation—as a legal alternative to burial and cremation in the UK.

After decades working with the dead, Hughes believes the process offers a more natural and environmentally friendly way to handle death.

Human composting involves placing a body in a sealed vessel filled with organic materials like straw, wood chips, and alfalfa. Within about 60 days, the body fully transforms into nutrient-rich soil.

Although the practice remains illegal in the UK, a government consultation led by the Law Commission is expected soon, potentially opening the door to change.

Hughes recently visited Return Home, the world’s first large-scale human composting facility located near Seattle, where the process is already legal. Families there receive the soil created from their loved ones, often using it to grow plants in their memory.

He even personally experienced lying in one of the vessels, describing it as peaceful and natural—“like being immersed in summer.” For Hughes, the process represents transformation rather than disposal, calling it one of the most honest and hopeful ways to approach death.

🕯️🪨 The Tragic Story of John Jones — The Man Forever Sealed Inside Nutty Putty Cave
In November 2009, 26-year-old medical student John Edward Jones entered Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave with friends and family, expecting an evening of adventure in a place known for its tight, twisting passages. John was experienced enough to feel comfortable underground — but one wrong turn changed everything.
He crawled into a narrow tunnel he believed would open into a larger chamber called “Bob’s Push.” Instead, the passage tightened downward into a 10-inch by 18-inch crevice, forcing him headfirst into a vertical shaft. His arms were pinned, his chest compressed, and there was no room to back out. He was trapped upside down, alone in the dark. 🌑
Rescuers arrived quickly. Over the next 28 hours, more than a hundred people fought to free him, setting up pulley systems, anchors, and makeshift harnesses. But Nutty Putty’s fragile limestone made every attempt dangerous — one wrong move could collapse the rock entirely. Despite their relentless effort, gravity and physiology worked against him. Blood pooled in his head and chest, and late on November 25, John went into cardiac arrest. 💔
After his death, authorities faced an impossible decision. Recovering his body would have risked more lives. With his family’s consent, rescuers sealed the entrance with concrete. Nutty Putty Cave became John’s tomb, permanently closed in 2009. Today the site stands as a memorial — a place frozen in time, reminding visitors of how quickly adventure can turn tragic. 🕊️
Before its closure, Nutty Putty Cave had already seen multiple emergency rescues, including several near-fatal incidents. Its notorious “birth canal” passages challenged even the most seasoned cavers.

📰 *Tradition or Exploitation? Villagers Question Chief’s Costly Demands*

Villagers under Chief Chimombe’s jurisdiction are up in arms over what they say are forced payments for the late chief’s tombstone unveiling and memorial ceremony.

On top of that, they’re being asked to fund toilet construction at Bhasera Police Station — demands that have ignited anger in a community already struggling to survive.

Each village has reportedly been asked to contribute US$12, with part of the funds allocated to the police toilet project.

In addition, village heads say households must provide US$5 and a six-pack of Chibuku Super beer for the memorial event.
