Quid est homo? Quis est homo?
What is the human being? Who is the human being?
These questions were at the heart of the ICEEL 2026 Conference in Rome — an international dialogue at the intersection of science, philosophy, the arts, and ethical reflection.
Over two days, voices from 46 countries came together to explore the challenges and responsibilities of engineering life — in light of technological innovation and human dignity.

Rome. Vatican. A moment where dialogue becomes encounter.

A special highlight of the 3rd ICEEL Ethics Conference in Rome:
the audience with Pope Leo XIV.

We were honored to share and discuss the central theme of the conference
Quid est homo? Quis est homo?

His attentive presence, genuine interest, and encouraging words made this encounter truly meaningful.

Two extraordinary days in Rome —
where science, philosophy, theology and the arts came together to ask one of humanity’s oldest questions:
What is the human being — and who is the human being?

From inspiring panels and intense discussions to unforgettable encounters — including a truly special dialogue with David Cronenberg — ICEEL 2026 brought together brilliant minds from around the world.

These are just a few impressions from a conference that reminded us how vital it is to think together — across disciplines, perspectives, and cultures.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

General Assembly points towards ICEEL Conference

During the 2026 General Assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life, the upcoming 3rd International Conference Ethics of Engineering Life (ICEEL) was highlighted as an important platform for continued interdisciplinary dialogue.
In the context of this year’s Assembly, dedicated to fundamental questions concerning the human condition, emerging technologies, and ethical responsibility, reference was made to ICEEL as a space where scholars, scientists, ethicists, artists, religious leaders and policymakers will gather to deepen precisely these conversations.
The conference, organized within the framework of NCCR Molecular Systems Engineering, will take place in March 2026 and continues the collaborative exchange between engineering life sciences and ethical reflection.
We are grateful for the shared commitment to fostering thoughtful, global discourse on the future of engineering life.
