🌟 Real Change Happens When Everyone Has a Seat at the Table!🌟

At HYCON, we know that sustainable projects aren't built by experts alone. They're built WITH communities. That's why participation and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do!

Here's what we do at HYCON:
- We try to identify ALL stakeholder; especially those who are often left out
- We use tools like "power walks" to understand social dynamics (the results can be eye-opening!)
- We work hard to protect and empower women, who are KEY players in water, energy, and food systems

Did you know? The Dublin Principles recognise that women play a central role in water management (gwpo-gwp.org).
They're the ones collecting water, managing household resources, and working in agriculture. Yet they often face exclusion and marginalization.

That's why we start every project with a thorough analysis of who's involved, to make sure everyone can participate. This creates real ownership; and that's what makes solutions last!

When we protect and empower women, we're not just doing the right thing. We're building better, more sustainable projects that improve livelihoods for EVERYONE. 💚

🌊 Powering Winterthur Sustainably – While Protecting Our Fish Friends! 🐟

Did you know that HYCON manages two small hydropower plants right here in Winterthur? For our client Nordstrom GmbH, we handle everything from day-to-day operations to long-term planning for facility renewals.
But it's not just about generating clean energy – it's about doing it responsibly! 🌱

Here's the challenge: About 20 years ago, a fish passage was built to help fish swim upstream past the dam. That worked great! But getting back downstream is still dangerous for our finned friends.

Now, as part of updating the operating permits, we're working hard to find solutions that protect fish during their downstream journey. It's all about balancing renewable energy production with protecting our local ecosystems.

Clean energy + environmental protection = a sustainable future for Winterthur!

Have questions about hydropower or fish migration? Drop them in the comments!

🚧 From Crisis to Connection: Building Roads in Eastern DRC 🚧
Did you know that the Democratic Republic of Congo faces one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises? Over 20 million people are affected, including more than 7 million who have been forced to flee their homes.
But there's hope; and it starts with something as fundamental as Roads.
In East DRC, the team is working with the SDC to build more than just roads, their building connections:
• Connections to healthcare for remote villages
• Connections to markets for local farmers
• Connections to opportunity for entire communities
Through the "cash-for-work" program, jobs are created today while building the infrastructure needed for tomorrow's economic growth.
Meet Thomas from HYCON, one of our backstopping experts. He's using his engineering skills to help our partners (HEKS, ADESO, TPO, ACCB) protect these vital roads from storms and landslides.
The result? A practical field handbook with simple solutions that anyone can apply; no fancy equipment needed!
Every road built is a step toward stability, dignity, and hope for millions of Congolese families.

🌱 Big steps for sustainable farming and community resilience in Rwanda! 🇷🇼

Our team just returned from an inspiring validation mission in Kigali for the RAVADI project. We’re teaming up with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and fantastic local NGOs (Duhamic, Maison Shalom International, Practical Action, Alight) to empower both displaced and host communities through agriculture.
Right now, vulnerable farmers face hurdles like climate risks and a lack of access to credit.
The intended pilot project changes that by combining climate-smart farming, better access to financial services, and easy-to-use data tools.
The result? Stronger local value chains, social cohesion, and a clear path to self-reliance. 🌾
Check out some moments from our stakeholder meetings and our validation mission!

🇨🇭 A Switzerland that protects – not excludes.🇨🇭

As an organization active in humanitarian aid and development cooperation, Hycon GmbH takes a clear stance: We say NO to the "10 Millionen Schweiz" initiative.

Switzerland's strength has always been its openness, its commitment to human dignity, and its role as a responsible partner in global solidarity. This initiative – dubbed the "chaos initiative" by major business associations would force restrictive measures on asylum and family reunification if the population exceeds 9.5 million. It jeopardizes Switzerland's participation in the Schengen and Dublin agreements, undermining vital cooperation on security, migration management, and refugee protection.
We believe:
👉🏽No one chooses to flee lightly. We never know the full story behind a person's journey – and humanitarian protection must remain unconditional.
👉🏽Families belong together. Forcing separation contradicts the very values of compassion and human rights that guide our work.
👉🏽Sustainability includes people. True sustainability balances ecological responsibility with social justice – not exclusion.

Switzerland can pursue thoughtful demographic and environmental policies without sacrificing its humanitarian identity.
On June 14, we vote NO – for a Switzerland that stands with, not against, those in need.

Thank you Duhamic for having us! We really enjoyed talking to you and having this exchange.

🌍🗺️Ever wondered how maps and spatial data can actually change lives? 🌍🗺️
Last week, we had the chance to visit the Spring Colloquium for Geomatics Studies at FHNW Muttenz. We shared our ongoing project in Rwanda, where accurate land management and improved geodata are directly supporting the economic inclusion of refugee and displacement-affected populations—as well as the host communities living near them.
It was inspiring to show the students that geomatics isn’t just about surveying or mapping. It’s a powerful tool for humanitarian action, sustainable development, policy-making, and so much more. We hope we sparked some ideas about the diverse career paths waiting for them after graduation!
A heartfelt thank you to Prof. Dante for the invitation and for creating a space where academic knowledge meets real-world impact.

🌱 Big news from Chad! HYCON has just wrapped up the baseline study for PROFISEM, a program funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) that’s helping farmers adapt to climate change and grow more resilient crops.🌱
Quality seeds are the foundation of a stronger agricultural sector. That’s why PROFISEM’s current phase is focused on boosting farmer productivity, improving access to financing, and strengthening coordination between local authorities.

Our dedicated team in Chad has been proud to support multiple projects that directly uplift rural communities and strengthen the entire agricultural value chain. Together, we’re building a more food-secure future.

🕊️Do you know the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus?🕊️

As crisis doesn’t happen in silos, neither should our response. The Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus connects emergency aid, long-term development, and peace-building to tackle root causes, not just their symptoms. By aligning efforts across sectors, we shift from short-term relief to lasting resilience, break cycles of vulnerability, and create conditions where communities can truly thrive. In today’s complex emergencies, collaboration isn’t optional, but the only path to sustainable impact.
How is your organization operationalizing the nexus in the field?

✨🎂Happy 10th Birthday Hycon!🎂✨
But what happened throughout those ten years?

Let the words of Thomas Gross recount the early days of the company: "HYCON started in 2016 as a consulting engineering company with a focus on small hydropower projects. Thus, the original claim "HYCON - managing hydropower". The first projects and contracts were in hydropower. We started with engineering mandates for the rehabilitation of historic hydropower plants in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Soon after a call came to support a Swiss NGO in completing and commissioning a 200 kW hydropower plant in Basid, Tajikistan. Within 10 days and with lots of manpower, we finished construction works and commissioned the MHP, and brought a sustainable source of energy to this remote area in Central Asia. Later that year we also evaluated an energy project implemented by Welthungerhilfe in Tajikistan and Afghanistan. This project was also aimed at bringing renewable energy from hydropower and PV to remote villages. Ever since, renewable energies for rural areas are our heartbeat projects."

So, he started off alone and focused on hydropower. However, in 2020 Thomas Gross met Valentina Camponovo. Soon it became clear, that she would be a valuable addition for Hycon, as she brought in expertise in protection and a focus on humanitarian topics - a perfect fit for the up to this moment rather technical firm. Five years later, 2025, the third employee Piera Hug started an internship, bringing an additional area of expertise, as she studied international business management. As of the beginning of 2026, the firm now has a coverage of multiple supplementary areas of expertise.
