Can hydropower become even more flexible? ⚡

As solar and wind power continue to expand, hydropower plays a crucial role in balancing intermittent renewable energy. But flexibility comes with challenges: increased wear and tear on hydro-mechanical equipment and rapid water level fluctuations in rivers.

Hybridisation offers a smart way forward.

By combining hydropower plants with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and other renewable energy sources, operators can enhance flexibility while reducing adverse effects on equipment and downstream environments.

The experts at Gruner bring together a wide range of technical domains:
✅ Hydraulic engineering
✅ Hydraulic machinery
✅ Renewable energy
✅ Battery Energy Storage Systems

This makes Gruner an ideal partner for designing and planning hybridisation projects at hydropower plants – and beyond.

At the HYDRO HYBRIDIZATION 2026 conference, Frédéric Evers and Tristan Touzeau presented the paper:
"Hydropeaking Mitigation through Hybridization with Batteries – Challenges & Opportunities"

The paper was authored by Frédéric Evers, Tristan Touzeau and David Notzon, and highlights how hybridisation can support operators in making hydropower assets more flexible, resilient and ready for a renewable energy system.

Engineering resilience starts beneath the surface 🌍

How do soil, structures and seismic forces interact when safety truly matters?

From 1 to 3 July 2026, Gruner Stucky Ltd will be present at the 2026 International Conference on Computational Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction – CompDSSI in Riva del Garda, Italy. The conference focuses on advanced numerical approaches for analysing the dynamic response of soil-structure systems and their role in protecting civil engineering structures against natural hazards.

For Gruner, this topic is closely connected to our work in hydropower, dams and seismic safety. We are proud that Dr. Domenico Gallese is part of the Organising Committee, representing Gruner Stucky within an international expert community.

On July 3, 2026, Dr. Alban Kita will present the paper:

"Seismic Safety Assessment of a Double-Curvature Arch Dam through Progressively Non-linear Time-History Analyses."

His contribution will explore how advanced computational methods can support the seismic assessment of complex dam structures — and help engineers make informed decisions for safer infrastructure.

ICOLD Honours Marc Balissat with Honorary Award

Gruner is proud to congratulate our colleague, Marc Balissat on receiving an ICOLD Honorary Award at the 94th Annual Meeting of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) held in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The award was presented during the ICOLD General Assembly, where Mr Balissat was recognised alongside Vivek Kapadia and Humberto Juan Francisco Marengo Mogollón for their contributions to the international dam and hydropower community.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr Balissat has been widely respected for his technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to advancing dam engineering and hydropower development. His work has contributed to numerous major projects and has helped shape the profession both in Switzerland and internationally.

This honorary distinction is a fitting recognition of his longstanding dedication to the industry and his contribution to the global engineering community.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Marc on this well-deserved achievement.

Across Europe, more than 8,000 large dams help provide drinking water, renewable energy, flood protection and climate resilience for millions of people.

Today, on Dams and Reservoirs Day 2026, we celebrate the essential role that dams, reservoirs and hydraulic infrastructure play in securing a sustainable future for Europe 🌍.

This year’s theme, “Securing Water Resilience for Europe”, highlights the growing importance of resilient water management in the face of climate change and increasing environmental challenges.

At Gruner Stucky Ltd, we are proud to contribute our expertise in hydropower, dams and hydraulic engineering to projects that support safe, reliable and sustainable water infrastructure worldwide.

A big thank you to all engineers, experts and partners working every day to strengthen Europe’s water resilience 💧

Today we celebrate UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.

Engineering is a profession that continually evolves. The challenges facing our societies — climate resilience, sustainable infrastructure and energy transition — require engineers who can combine strong technical fundamentals with new ways of working.

Digitalisation is becoming an essential part of this evolution. From advanced modelling and digital twins to data-driven decision-making, the engineers of tomorrow will need to master digital tools while maintaining the rigorous engineering principles that underpin safe and reliable design.

At Gruner, we see this transformation every day. Our teams are working to integrate innovation and digital engineering approaches into projects across infrastructure, energy and buildings.

World Engineering Day is also an opportunity to recognise and encourage the next generation of engineers who will continue to develop the profession and shape the infrastructure of the future.
