There are more than 500 gene therapies in the clinical research pipeline, which is driving demand for lab capacity that's dedicated to specialized testing and services to help advance these therapies through the approval and commercialization process. To help address this need, we held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at our Middleton, Wisconsin site this week to celebrate the opening of new lab space that provides additional analytical testing capacity for our biopharma partners who are developing novel therapies for patients who need them most. We are proud to have been invited to participate in a unique expedition in Iceland where a team of scientists explored newly formed lava caves in nearly 400-degree environments in search of micro-organisms. Smithsonian Magazine covered their incredible journey and highlighted how the research team – including one of our scientists - leveraged our scanning electron microscope onsite to provide high-resolution images of new minerals that could be identified within 30 minutes. The findings also suggest how certain micro-organisms can subsist in extreme environments, which provides clues to how they may also survive on distant planets like Mars. Fifteen-year-old Jesper Ekoff isn’t letting his pollen allergy stop him from reaching for his dream to become a tennis pro. Thanks to our gold-standard allergy diagnostic tests, which are based on more than 50 years of research, Jesper’s doctor was able to pinpoint his allergy trigger – grass pollen. Our latest covers , a day to recognize the vital role bees and other pollinators play in our ecosystem. While bees help support up to one-third of our global food production, coexisting with them isn't a bed of roses for everyone. Some people experience severe, life-threatening allergic reactions to bee stings and the food industry must navigate quality control of bees' most popular product: honey.

To help address these challenges, we develop allergen tests that help improve diagnosis and treatment for people with severe allergies to bee and other stinging insect venom, as well as technologies that help ensure high-quality, unadulterated honey reaches consumers.

While for some, this time of year brings in new plants for bees to pollinate, let’s celebrate all that bees do for us and the technologies that help us all enjoy the benefits bees provide.

Congratulations to 7th grader Jainil Trivedi from San Ramon CA., for recently taking first prize at the Contra Costa County Science Fair and for being the only 7th grader nominated to compete in the national Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. Judges awarded Jainil for his project titled, “Smart AI Enabled IT Systems to Detect and Predict Trends of Toxic Gasses for Industrial Communities,” alongside his brother, who was also recognized for his research in a different category.

The Thermo Fisher JIC is an annual STEM competition that seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators to solve 21st century challenges. We’re looking forward to being amazed by what the participants of the Thermo Fisher JIC will present in the fall when they will compete for the grand prize of $25K in Washington DC!

Gatik and Jainil Trivedi also advanced to the state competition, where they won first and second prizes, respectively.

Researchers at the University at Buffalo are working to improve the diagnosis and treatment of complex, potentially devastating diseases like Alzheimer’s through protein mapping, or proteomics. Jun Qu, PhD., the group leader of the Proteomics and Bioanalysis lab, has seen improvements in the speed of his research using the Orbitrap Astral Mass Spectrometer.

According to Qu, “If we used traditional biochemical technology, it might take decades to test each protein in a project like this. Here, we take a very small sample, and we can quantify 10,000 proteins in seconds.”

For people in need of a kidney transplant, finding a match can take years. Throw in a patient whose immune system has formed antibodies that could increase the risk of rejection, and the matching process can get even more complex. That’s the situation Kadin Hoven and his family found themselves in after Kadin experienced two transplants and two rejections by the time he was just 7 years old.

Doctors told Kadin’s parents the chances of finding a third match were incredibly low. So began Kadin’s three-year journey on dialysis – until a family friend stepped up to get tested despite the odds. And thanks to the power of science, Kadin found his perfect match.
