March Aviation Highlights: Navigating the Most Significant Disruption Since COVID-19
March brought the most severe operational shock to global aviation since the pandemic. Following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian military targets in late February, the Middle East was plunged into widespread airspace closures, rerouting chaos, and unprecedented fuel logistics challenges. The industry responded with resilience, but the scale of disruption demanded extraordinary effort from every corner of the sector.
At iFuel, our teams worked around the clock to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply and operational coordination for operators navigating one of the most challenging environments we have ever faced.
Aviation Industry Updates
🔹 The Middle East, described as "a high-capacity bridge" between Europe and Asia, saw that bridge effectively collapse, pushing traffic into congested alternative corridors and driving delays worldwide.
🔹 Airspace closures resulted in a 59% reduction in all Middle East flights, with Emirates cutting operations by over half and Qatar Airways parking approximately 43% of its fleet by late March.
🔹 A drone strike hit a fuel storage tank at Kuwait Airport, and the UAE briefly closed its entire airspace overnight on March 16–17, demonstrating how quickly even partially open FIRs can shut without warning.
🔹 EASA renewed its Middle East airspace avoidance advisory on March 28, forcing Asia-Europe traffic into narrower corridors over Azerbaijan and Central Asia.
🔹 SAF and sustainability discussions continued, with ICAO adopting new noise standards and the industry reaffirming its long-term clean aviation commitments.
