When biscuits break, valuable production output is lost. 🍪

Every broken product can mean lost yield, additional waste, and fewer high-quality biscuits reaching the package. But with fragile products moving through multiple stages of production, where does breakage occur – and how can manufacturers reduce it?

Our latest article examines this industry challenge and explores how thoughtful line design, effective process control, and gentle product handling can help protect cookies and biscuits throughout production.

Chocolate may look simple from the outside. 🍫

Inside the plant, transforming a recipe idea into a shelf-ready product requires a lot of effort, equipment, and expertise.

The right equipment is essential – but it is the combination of technology and process expertise that brings quality and consistency to every production step.

How does it all come together?

What connects unlocking your phone with a glance to 1,000 microscopic coating layers? 📱

Behind facial recognition lies an extraordinary level of precision. Optical filters must control selected wavelengths of infrared light while meeting the stringent cleanliness and reliability requirements of high-volume semiconductor production.

The HELIOS vacuum coating system from Bühler Leybold Optics deposits stacks of up to 1,000 ultra-thin layers onto semiconductor wafers. With individual layers as thin as 5 nanometers, the system produces precise optical filters that allow sensors to detect selected infrared wavelengths.

Combined with RECIF Technologies’ automated wafer-handling system, HELIOS can process 300 mm wafers with minimal contact and contamination. This brings high-precision optical coating into automated semiconductor production.

Technology alone cannot reduce food loss.

Food loss is a complex challenge that extends across the entire value chain – from drying and storage to transportation, processing, and distribution.

In the latest episode of the Deeply Rooted podcast by Partners in Food Solutions (PFS), Mary Olwal, Head of Business Area Grain Quality and Supply at Bühler, joins Mandla Nkomo, CEO PFS, to explore how stronger food systems can be built across Africa.
The conversation of the two “Afro-optimists” looks beyond individual machines. It highlights the importance of combining technology with local expertise, technical training, research, and a long-term maintenance culture.

Mary also shares how initiatives such as the African Milling School, Nairobi, Kenya and local innovation centers help develop the skills and processes needed to reduce losses and strengthen food processing businesses.

Two Track Malting operates one of the most advanced small-scale malting plants in the world.

And this is how it came about.

“Our business picked up substantially – more than we could handle. We started looking for a partner who could grow with us – and that’s when we found Bühler,” says Greg Kessel, Co-founder of Two Track Malting.

Together, Two Track Malting and Bühler set out to build an advanced small-scale malting plant based on RimoMalt. The modular, all-in-one system integrates steeping, germination, and kilning into a single scalable unit.

While conventional malting systems can be too large for craft producers, RimoMalt offers automation and process control in a format designed for small and mid-sized maltsters.
