Why do rehabilitation-robotics market estimates vary so wildly? One reason: we often count patients when we should be modelling capacity. Clinical need creates treatment demand. But a reusable rehabilitation robot only becomes another sale when eligibility, workflow, funding and utilisation justify additional capacity. That distinction helps explain why enormous patient populations can coexist with surprisingly modest commercial markets.

Join us on 9 September, the MotusAcademy × RehaCare Asia Leadership Forum: “From Pilot to Practice: Closing Asia’s Rehabilitation Technology Adoption Gap.” Together with Adj A/Prof Loh Yong Joo, Prof Tan Boon Yeow, Dr Hsiao-ju (Rita) Cheng and Ms Goh Shi Min, we’ll examine what it really takes to move rehabilitation technology from promising pilots into routine care. We’ll focus on the questions that matter: What makes hospitals adopt? What counts as meaningful evidence? Who pays? What works beyond the clinic? And what should we stop piloting and start scaling? https://www.medicalfair-asia.com/conferences-and-forums/motusacademy-x-rehacare-asia-leadership-forum

Imitation learning will not replace the therapist. Its real value is learning the judgement behind therapy—when to assist, when to challenge, when to adapt, and when to stop. The future of rehabilitation robotics is not copied movement. It is clinician-informed, outcome-linked intelligence that scales expert judgement safely. https://zenkoh.substack.com/p/imitation-learning-will-not-replace

Rehabilitation AI does not need to race towards an autonomous therapist. It needs something more fundamental: a reliable verification layer. The clinically serious loop is not simply sense → decide → act. It is: observe → interpret → propose → constrain → act → measure → verify → update. In rehabilitation, more autonomy without better verification can simply scale uncertainty. The real opportunity may sit above the hardware — in longitudinal outcomes, patient-state modelling, clinical rules, therapist correction, and evidence that an intervention actually improves life beyond the machine. The winners may not be those with the most autonomous robots, but those that can prove when autonomy is justified. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/rehabilitation-ai-does-need-autonomous-therapist-needs-zen-koh-0rhpc/

Spatial computing will not transform rehabilitation simply by making therapy more immersive. The bigger opportunity is to make functional transfer measurable: can what a patient achieves in therapy survive in the kitchen, bathroom, workplace, community and other environments where life actually happens? The future may therefore belong less to headsets and virtual clinics — and more to systems that understand the relationship between body, task and place, while generating evidence clinicians and payers can trust. Recovery is ultimately not proven inside the simulation. It is proven when people can safely reclaim the routines, roles and environments that matter to them.

Spatial Computing Will Not Transform Rehabilitation by Making Therapy More Immersive

Spatial computing enters rehabilitation through the front door of engagement: patients are bored, therapy is repetitive, clinicians are stretched, and immersive environments appear to make practice more tolerable.
