🌊 Hybrid VoF to Lagrangian CFD Modeling with OpenFOAM for Atomization Applications 🫧
The CFD animation shows the transition from the Volume of Fluid (VoF) to the Discrete Phase
Model (DPM) approach, which is a pivotal technique for simulating the complex processes of jet
breakup and atomization.
In this video, you can see how the coupling of VoF with DPM can lower the cost of your simulations,
providing more detail and capturing the dynamics of liquid breakup and spray formation, without
having to resolve the interface of each droplet. This is easily achievable by switching the solution
from VOF to the Lagrangian equation of motion based on the local value of the volume fraction.

💥 Cavitation refers to a physical phenomenon where the fluid static pressure drops below the v***r pressure, this leads to the formation of micron-sized bubbles (known as v***r cavities). These bubbles don't take long till they implode to the inside (collapse) causing cyclic stresses which in some cases can lead to considerable damage on the nearest exposed surface.

🎥 The video shows the formation of these bubbles due to the pressure drop before and after the pump gear teeth. Taking the bubble on the left as a reference you can have a sense of the shock waves sent away each time the new cavities implode. To know more about cavitation make sure you subscribe to our newsletter “CFD Dose” for a full series on this topic soon [🔗Link in bio].

When discussing the reliability of CFD results, you may find that the terms "verification" and "validation" are often tossed around quite liberally, yet they hold distinctly crucial meanings. I don't want to be too conservative here but just to put things in perspective: Verification is all about ensuring your CFD model — whether that's an algorithm, scheme, or new turbulence model — is performing calculations as you intended. It's essentially a test to confirm that the code is functioning correctly.

Validation, on the other hand, focuses on the accuracy of your model in representing the real-world physical phenomena you're trying to simulate. This step is critical for confirming that the right equations are being employed to capture the essence of what you're observing or predicting in the real world. Both processes are fundamental in CFD to build confidence and make sure your setup is reliable (why we call it V&V).

Understanding the particulate flow inside a 90-degree bend is crucial for optimizing fluid dynamics in various industries. When particles navigate this sharp turn, they experience significant changes in velocity and direction, leading to potential issues like erosion, pressure loss, and flow separation. This benchmark is well understood and validated in the CFD code T-Flows at different particle inertia and fluid timescales. Our advanced solutions ensure efficiency and effectiveness in managing these complex flows.

✍ Otherwise, don't even try.

◼ Many of us judge the process a bit too early, sometimes before it even takes shape (I'm personally guilty of this).

◼ Most of us quit too early because we're not naturally wired for delayed gratification.

And yet the ONLY ones who make it are the ones who are audacious enough to go ALL the way.

💬 What's your number 1 challenge with long-term goals? be honest ☝
