Since drone regulations in the US tightened late last year, business owners who've depended on DJI have been facing decisions about what system to switch to.

Brian Layhew saw the decision coming early. And he knew that the system he'd buy had to be better than what was leaving behind. His company, 9 Line Aerial Media, LLC. was founded on DJI. And his research led him to an exhilarating choice:

"Should I buy this drone platform that is really different than my last one, but performs better than anything I'm seeing out there?"

He took the leap. This is the story of the opportunities he found on the other side.

Special thanks to James Guetschow and Carlos J. González for appearances, footage and work behind this powerful testimonial.

What does a dependable, high-accuracy sensor have to do with field efficiency?

A lot more than you would think.

In fact, on a 200 ac (80 ha) site, you’re talking a difference between delivering data by lunch time and moving on to other high-value tasks, or spending the whole day getting the deliverables.

Imagine how many more surveys and critical tasks you can fit into that time you’d save.

Customers who’ve invested in SURVEY61 and WingtraRAY are already starting to retain that time and take on more work, giving them a healthy return on investment.

If you haven’t given this platform a closer look, what are you waiting for? wingtra.com/ray/survey61

If you’re one of the top construction contractor firms in Switzerland, you’re going to choose a system that keeps you in that position.

WALO Bertschinger is such a company, and they recently invested in WingtraRAY and SURVEY61 after testing it for super-efficient repeat accuracy on a small-sized sport complex project.

They’re excited because it’s easy to operate yet powerful—not only speeding up operations on current projects but also opening the door to tackling new larger-scale ones as well.

“We are confident that over the next year, the survey data coming out of our new Wingtra will contribute to better planning, profit protection, reduced field hours and an overall return on what we’ve investment.”~Pascal Bonderer, Profit Center Manager, WALO.

We’ve spoken with a lot of customers over the years who found us due to efficiency glass ceilings with multi-rotors.

Now, more people might be finding us because we are Blue UAS certified and ahead on compliance in a time of tightening regulations.

The story starts differently for each, but when our customers take the leap their experiences converge: they discover that there’s more to our orange bird and workflow than just the reasons they found us ... and a lot more business upgrades than just a different look and feel, like:

👍 More possibilities: either to take on smaller surveys more often, or larger surveys than they ever thought possible in days instead of weeks.

👍 Friendly, personalized customer support: as they take on projects that actually move the needle on what’s possible in drone surveying and mapping. (See wingtra.com/case_studies for examples.)

👍 A lean learning curve with more reliability, capacity, safety and confidence on the other side.

👍 Minimized points of failure and field hiccups.

👍 A system ready for new OOP and BVLOS envelopes.

👍 The list goes on.

Don’t get us wrong, multi-rotors still have their place and are amazing for inspection and other applications. But if surveying and mapping is what you do, now is the time to look closely at a solution that’s 100 percent dedicated to it so you can reach that next level.

It's time to celebrate, because SURVEY61 on WingtraRAY is here!

This payload arrives to fix the problems we've been hearing about for years:

GCPs taking hours per flight to set up. Volumetrics disputes costing six figures. Data arriving three weeks late when the site's already moved on.

How can one little payload take care of all these issues, you ask?

First, SURVEY61 delivers survey-quality accuracy without ground control points. Plugged into WingtraRAY, it covers 400 acres or 4 linear miles per field hour (setup included), and the Wingtra workflow gives you survey-ready deliverables in hours.

Next, no need to stop operations or wait for waivers, you can fly over active sites—highways, cities, construction zones—with a drone that’s Cat 3 OOP approved with a C6 mark.

Now: it’s time to survey weekly instead of monthly. Plan from current data, not guesswork. Catch issues before they become change orders and massive project delays.

For earthworks teams managing tight schedules and tighter budgets—this is the payload you’ve been waiting for.

Check out all the details and benefits on our dedicated page: wingtra.com/ray/SURVEY61.

Fact: Two teams using drones to survey can face completely different returns on investment:

👷Team 1: One travels to, sets up, flies, processes, and delivers a 50 ha site in half a day with a single survey drone toolchain

👷Team 2: Spends a full day setting up with several toolchains, flying with another toolchain, processing with another toolchain … plus data cleanup in the office the following day

Why is team 2 continuing to work like this?

Because most folks still think like this:

-battery minutes, check
-payload capacity, check
-coverage per flight, check
-and so on … spec after spec

But if you want more ROI from your drone platform, you need to look at the truth: only about 15 percent of what it can give you back, in terms of time, happens in the air.

Actually, you can only control a small fraction of the time you gain or lose by looking at the specs of the drone itself.

Here’s where the majority of your time gets lost:

• Planning and permissions
• Mobilization and travel
• GCP placement or GNSS setup
• Field setup and calibration
• Re-flights and contingencies
• Data transfer and processing
• QA and deliverables

Same sensor. Same resolution. Totally different outcomes.

Whole system thinking doesn’t ask about specs, it asks: “How much faster can we deliver a usable dataset to the client if we choose this system?”

Is your drone manufacturer with you on this kind of thinking?

It's hard to put into words how easy yet powerful the WingtraRAY is to use for a mapping mission. That's why we really love gather groups and run demos—seeing it all run easy and smooth is all the proof you need!

The next best thing is when a company like Drone Nerds films one with us.

When you have ten minutes, grab a coffee and watch this demo, featuring our Sales Enablement and Training Manager, Ben Snyder who joins Drone Nerds' Technical Director Giovanni Ruiz and Drone Nerds' Advanced UAS Trainer Stuart de la Rosa.

This is your chance to take an easy-breezy closer look at a leading, fully US regulations compliant survey drone—capturing data on a beautiful Miami, Florida, day—right from the comfort of your office or couch.

The hidden cost of waiting to switch your drone survey platform isn't on your P&L—it's in the contracts you can't bid on.

Over the past six months, we've noticed something troubling: survey teams are so focused on the upfront cost of fleet transitions that they're missing the bigger financial picture.

New airframes. New sensors. Retraining. Compliance concerns. So they delay the decision.

Meanwhile, they're caught between expensive US quadcopter systems that lack maturity and restricted drones they can no longer use on critical projects.

But here's what no one's calculating: What does staying put actually cost you?

This is how you measure the loss of delayed decisions:

🚫 Federal contracts you can't bid on
🚫 Projects that drag because you're waiting on waivers
🚫 Margins that keep shrinking while competitors move faster

The truth is, you're not buying drones. You're buying access to the work that matters and protection against regulatory changes.

When teams transition to NDAA-compliant, FCC-approved, Blue-listed VTOL platforms like ours, the ROI conversation changes completely.

Even though it's very cool observe, they're not celebrating the hardware as much as what it unlocked:

✓ Access to federal and regulated contracts they were locked out of before
✓ Operations over people projects without waiver delays
✓ 3-5x more coverage per flight with lower survey cost per acre
✓ Fast adoption and easy scaling across teams
✓ A defensible fleet that auditors and insurers actually understand

As much as we love to share tech—and impressive WingtraRAY drone coverage comparison graphics—this isn't purely a technology decision. It's a business continuity decision.

If you are looking at updating your fleet now, make sure you're opening doors not locked behind them.

🤸‍♂️ Let’s do a deep dive into drone survey results, starting with some light mental gymnastics. These exercises will get you in shape for making the best decision when you choose the best system for your business:

It’s nice cover an area fast ..... it’s nicer to easily fit your surveys in tight weather and airspace shut-down windows without delays or repeats.

Efficiency is a idea marketers can play with ..... customers actually repeating their earthworks site surveys more often and making more precise planning decisions, is not.

It’s great to have high coverage per battery ..... so long as it means you’re doing more jobs in less time.

Large image footprint sounds interesting ..... single-flight capture of rich 3D insights at high accuracy without cross-hatch flights and bloated data is definitely interesting.

Being on the Blue UAS sounds like a safe bet ..... being able to search wider, bid on, win and successfully deliver any project, including Federally-funded ones, is real job security.

A parachute is fun drone safety tech..... and you can actually enjoy it when flying over people legally while knowing your business can grow in places other systems won’t take you.

When you’re shopping for a survey drone solution, we’re here to encourage you ask the hard questions and keep your sights on the larger, long-term goals.
