Fact: Two teams using drones to survey can face completely different returns on investment:
👷Team 1: One travels to, sets up, flies, processes, and delivers a 50 ha site in half a day with a single survey drone toolchain
👷Team 2: Spends a full day setting up with several toolchains, flying with another toolchain, processing with another toolchain … plus data cleanup in the office the following day
Why is team 2 continuing to work like this?
Because most folks still think like this:
-battery minutes, check
-payload capacity, check
-coverage per flight, check
-and so on … spec after spec
But if you want more ROI from your drone platform, you need to look at the truth: only about 15 percent of what it can give you back, in terms of time, happens in the air.
Actually, you can only control a small fraction of the time you gain or lose by looking at the specs of the drone itself.
Here’s where the majority of your time gets lost:
• Planning and permissions
• Mobilization and travel
• GCP placement or GNSS setup
• Field setup and calibration
• Re-flights and contingencies
• Data transfer and processing
• QA and deliverables
Same sensor. Same resolution. Totally different outcomes.
Whole system thinking doesn’t ask about specs, it asks: “How much faster can we deliver a usable dataset to the client if we choose this system?”
