Larger-volume autoinjectors do not simply ask more of the device. They also ask more of the manufacturing strategy behind it.

As subcutaneous drug delivery evolves to support larger volumes and more complex formulations, manufacturers must consider how changing device architectures affect component handling, assembly process control, final device testing, and future scale-up requirements.

This was the message from SMC Mould Innovation General Manager Dolph (Adolph) Keller in a recent Schaffhauser Wirtschaft feature, which took a look inside our team’s work in Hallau, Switzerland.

To write the piece, Petra Roost from Schaffhausen – area for makers visited the “unassuming 1950s building” where our team builds highly sophisticated injection molds weighing up to three tons. Reflecting on the site’s impressive output, she noted: “Precision down to the micrometer matters, whether the final product is an autoinjector, a nasal spray, or an eye drop system.”

The automation paradox: why low-volume doesn’t always mean manual assembly.

At the 2026 CPHI Milan, we will be highlighting a challenge that many autoinjector manufacturers face – how to achieve the quality and consistency of full automation without requiring high-volume production.
