Today, we celebrate the environment and its biodiversity which is the variety a variability of lie on earth measuring from genes, species, communities and the ecological ecosystems.
Human beings are an integral part or the ecosystem we cannot continue to live in isolation and neglect of it. Biodiversity is important for the survival of all living things big or small, on land or in water, in the air or in the soil. We must understand that while there is a food chain and ranking of species every living organism is connected to another living organism and together it forms a network of diverse lifeforms on the planet.
The importance of biodiversity cannot be overemphasised ;
- it boost the ecosystems productivity where each organism or specie, no matter how small has an important role to play e.g. A larger number of plants species means greater crop variety, greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for all lifeforms, healthy ecosystems can better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters.
- a healthy biodiversity provides a number of natural services for everyone e.g. Protection of water resources, soil formation and protection, nutrient storage and recycling, pollution breakdown and absorption, recovery from unpredictable events.
- a healthy biodiversity provides a number biological resources: food, medicine, wood products, future resources, diversity in genes, species & ecosystems.
Do your bit on this 5th June and always by educating other people and also bringing a lifestyle that put lesser burden on the environment.
