BRUCELLOSIS
It is an infectious and important zoonotic bacterial diesase caused by Brucella species and is characterized by abortion in late pregnancy. There are several species affecting farm animals; B. abortus in callte, B. melitensis in sheep and goats, B. suis in pigs, B. ovis in sheep, B. canis in dogs and B. neotomoe in rats.
- Each B. spp tends to affect a particular animal species. the bacteria grows on female and male reproductive organs in sexually mature animals. Infected animals serves as reservoirs of infection which often persist indefinitely.
BRUCELLOSIS IN CATTLE
- They are obligate parasites of the ge***al tract.
- Cows get infected by ingestion, inhalation or AI or natural service.
Infected cows secrete B. organisms in vaginal discharges, placenta, aborted foetus, milk.
- Abortion occurs in the 3rd trimester (7th and 8th month)
SYMPTOMS
Abortion, stilt birth, weak calf birth, retention of foetal membrane, epididymitis is observed in males.
BRUCELLOSIS IN PIGS
- Caused by B. suis.
- Transmission is through coitus
- Abortion is seen in 2nd and 3rd month of gestation
- Orchitis in infected boars.
BRUCELLOSIS IN SHEEP AND GOATS
- Transmission is san=me as in cattle; abortion in ewes; orchitis; epididymitis in bucks.
BRUCELLOSIS IN HORSE
- Caused by B. abortus and Actinomyces bovis.
- orchitis; accumulation of fluid in sc***um ; abortion in late gestation (7 to 9 months or third semester); retention of palcenta.
DAIGNOSIS
MRT, RBPT, and STAT are the main tests used to confirm the presence of Brucella.
TREATMENT AND CONTROL
- Treatment is inefectif.
- Vaccination is the most common way to protect the herd. this vaccination is cell mediated.
BRUCELLOSIS IN HUMANS
- humans are succeptible to B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. suis and rarely B. canis.
- transmission in humans occur through contact with secretions or excreations from infected animals.
- Routes of entry include skin abrasion, inhalation, and iningestion.
- Raw milk and dairy produce made with unpasturized milk are important source of infection.
SIGNS
Mild feaver; malaise; fatigue; muscle and joint paints; chill; fluctuating pyrexia, perspiration; Osteomyelitis.
PREVENTION
- in 60degree celsis for 10 minutes, the organism cannot survive. Pasturisation of milk kills the Brucella.
- Every disinfectants and detergents are lethal to brucella.
- Low pH is lethal to brucella and direct sunlight too.
MAIN SOURCE OF INFECTION
- Uterine discharge of infected animals; aborted foetus; infected semen
SPREAD MAINLY THROUGH
- Ingestion of contaminated food and water; AI; tail splashing of urine; conjuctival routes; veterinary activities; rural poor sanitary conditions.
Today is the world's brucellosis day. It is the world's most widespread of all zoonosis and has enormous economic impact on the animal industry.
