MINES MINISTER, SHARES GLOBAL MINING SAFETY VISION AT INTERNATIONAL MINE RESCUE COMPETITION.
Kitwe, 26, April 2026-Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, has reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening global mining safety standards during the inaugural International Mine Rescue Competition, which has attracted 22 elite rescue teams from across the world.
The landmark event, the first of its kind in Africa, has brought together participants from countries including Canada, Australia, China, India, Burkina Faso, Colombia, and Poland, among others. The competition will provide a unique platform for knowledge exchange, skills demonstration, and collaboration in mine rescue and emergency response.
Speaking during the official opening at Garden Court Hotel in Kitwe, Mr. Kabuswe emphasized that mining safety remains a top priority not only for Zambia but for the global mining community. He noted that as mining operations expand and become more complex, there is an urgent need for countries to work together in enhancing safety protocols and preparedness.
“The importance of mine rescue teams cannot be overstated. These brave men and women stand as the last line of defense in times of crisis, and their readiness can mean the difference between life and death,” he said.
The Minister highlighted Zambia’s strides in improving mine safety through strengthened regulations, increased inspections, and investment in modern rescue technologies. He further stressed that hosting such an international event demonstrates Zambia’s growing role as a key player in promoting safe and sustainable mining practices.
Mr. Kabuswe also commended participating teams for their dedication and professionalism, noting that the competition was not merely about winning but about learning from one another and building lasting partnerships.
“As we share experiences and best practices, we are collectively raising the bar for safety standards across the mining sector,” he added.
The International Mine Rescue Competition featured simulated emergency scenarios designed to test the teams’ technical skills, coordination, and response times under pressure. The event is expected to set a new benchmark for mine safety excellence and foster stronger international cooperation in the industry.
The competition marks a significant milestone in Zambia’s mining sector, positioning the country as a hub for global dialogue and innovation in mine safety.
