That’s the reality of cervical cancer—349,000 lives lost in 2022 alone, alongside 662,000 new cases diagnosed that same year.

To change this, the WHO Global Strategy sets a clear target: screen 70% of women with a high-performance test by age 35, and again by age 45.

The 2026 WHO guideline reinforces HPV DNA testing as the primary screening method for the general female population—and underscores the power of genotype-based risk stratification.

Under this framework, 12 carcinogenic HPV types are classified into four risk groups (1a–1d). By incorporating limited or extended genotyping, laboratories gain a built-in molecular triage approach that enables straightforward risk stratification and prioritized clinical management for HPV-positive women.
