Why VFD start frequency matters – and how to set it right
Most people assume a VFD starts from 0 Hz. In reality, when output frequency is 0, the motor lacks sufficient starting torque and cannot rotate. The motor only begins to accelerate after the output frequency reaches a certain value – that value is the start frequency.
✅ Three typical applications that require start frequency tuning:
① Multi‑pump parallel water supply systems
There is already water pressure in the pipes. Starting from 0 Hz makes it difficult for the pump to build up pressure – a certain start frequency is needed for a smooth start.
② High static friction loads
When the load has large static friction, starting from 0 Hz is hard. A properly set start frequency provides an initial impact to help the system break away from standstill.
③ Cone motors
During startup there is friction between the stator and rotor. The start frequency helps build enough magnetic flux quickly to maintain the air gap.
⚙️ How to set it right
Avoid the low‑frequency weak‑flux region – ensure enough starting torque
Do not set the start frequency too high, otherwise large current inrush may cause overcurrent trip
If overcurrent occurs during start, try extending the acceleration time
