❄️ More Cooling Energy Doesn’t Always Mean Better Cooling Performance
Yesterday, a customer from the fresh meat industry asked me:
“Can we double the cooling time of a 100ml ice pack?”
I believe many customers have the same expectation — they want an ice pack that stays cold as long as possible.
From a technical perspective, it is possible to increase cooling duration by optimizing the material formula. However, longer cooling time is not always the best solution.
Why?
Because an ice pack is not only about how much cold energy it stores.
It is also about how efficiently that cold energy is released. ❄️
For example:
🧊 Pure ice = 1.0x cooling energy storage
🧊 Optimized gel ice packs = 1.3x, 1.5x, or even higher
It may seem that more stored cooling energy means longer protection.
But there is one key factor many people overlook:
Cooling capacity ≠ Cooling performance
An ice pack needs to do two things:
✅ Store enough cooling energy
✅ Release cooling energy effectively to the product
Sometimes, storing more energy can slow down the release speed. This means:
❌ The ice pack is still cold
❌ But the product does not receive enough cooling in time
❌ The temperature control result may not meet expectations
A simple example:
💧 A large reservoir can store a lot of water, but if the outlet is too small, water cannot flow fast enough to meet demand.
The same principle applies to cold chain packaging.
A good ice pack solution requires the right balance between:
❄️ Cooling Capacity
⚡ Cooling Release Efficiency
📦 Real Application Requirements
That is why we always start by understanding:
🥩 What product needs protection?
(Fresh meat, seafood, pharmaceuticals, meal delivery, etc.)
🚚 How will it be transported?
(Room temperature, refrigerated truck, air freight, etc.)
⏱️ How long does cooling protection need to last?
(6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, or longer)
Then we optimize the formulation and structure to create the most suitable solution.
Because the best ice pack is not the one that stays cold the longest.
It is the one that:
🎯 Delivers the right amount of cooling energy at the right time to protect the product effectively.
That is the real value of a professional cold chain solution.
