The Surface That Changes Color.
Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong is wrapped in around 27,000 triangular aluminum panels.
Depending on the light, the façade shifts between cobalt blue, metallic purple and silver.
But here's the interesting part:
The panels aren't changing color.
The way light interacts with them is.
A color-shifting PVDF coating, triangular geometry and changing viewing angles work together to create the stadium's shimmering “Pearl of the Orient” appearance.
And there's another layer of intelligence behind the visual effect.
The original concept called for more than 47,000 panels in over 8,000 variations.
Parametric design reduced this to around 27,000 panels with only two main geometry types.
Complex appearance.
Rational system.
That is where architectural metal becomes more than a finish.
