Why LED Spacing Matters in Lightboxes
When designing an LED lightbox, it’s easy to focus on the LED itself.
But there’s another factor that can have a major impact on the final result:
LED spacing.
The distance between LEDs directly affects how evenly the light is distributed across the graphic.
If the LEDs are placed too far apart, you may see:
• Dark areas between LED rows
• Uneven brightness
• Visible shadows or banding
• Poor overall visual quality
If the spacing is too close, you may achieve excellent uniformity — but at the cost of:
• Higher LED consumption
• Higher power requirements
• Increased material cost
So there is no single “perfect” LED spacing for every lightbox.
The right spacing depends on several factors:
① Lightbox depth
A deeper lightbox generally allows the light to spread further before reaching the graphic.
② LED optical performance
Different LEDs have different beam angles and light distribution characteristics.
③ Graphic material
Fabric, acrylic and other materials diffuse light differently.
④ Required brightness
Retail displays, advertising lightboxes and exhibition displays may have very different brightness requirements.
⑤ LED layout
The arrangement of the LEDs is just as important as the spacing itself.
At LTS, we believe good lightbox lighting starts with the application — not simply with choosing the brightest LED.
The goal is to find the right balance between uniformity, brightness, energy efficiency and cost.
Because in a well-designed lightbox, you shouldn't notice the LEDs.
You should only notice the light.
