Interestingly, this wasn't the finish the customer was looking for. The drawing called for a clean, consistent machined surface rather than an unusually glossy appearance.

After reviewing the process, we focused on several factors that could influence the final surface finish:

✨ We thought we understood the "Grain Direction" requirement. Until the sheet metal parts were finished.....

We recently completed a few sheet metal parts that made us look at this term differently.

After the parts were finished, we realized that "grain" had been understood in two different ways.

One referred to the brushed finish, the visible surface texture created after fabrication. The other referred to the rolling direction of the sheet material, which is formed before cutting or bending and can affect bend performance, crack resistance, and the consistency of the finished part.πŸ”

Although they may look similar, they represent completely different manufacturing requirements. Since then, whenever we see "grain direction" on a drawing, one of the first questions we ask is: When you say "grain," do you mean the surface finish or the material rolling direction?

A bend angle can be within tolerance, but that doesn't automatically mean the part is ready for assembly.

We're also checking the hole locations, formed features, overall dimensions, and how the different bends come together in the final assembly. βš™οΈ
