Tailings dewatering should not begin with a filter press model.
It should begin with five engineering questions:
1. What are the normal, design and maximum dry-solids duties?
2. How does thickener underflow concentration affect rheology, pumpability and chamber filling?
3. What do representative pressure-filtration tests show across ore variability?
4. Which cycle steps—and which availability allowance—are included?
5. Where do dirty filtrate, clarified filtrate, wash water and off-spec slurry go during normal and upset conditions?
A press may have sufficient nominal filtration area and still become a bottleneck when feed rheology, buffer capacity, pump pressure ramp, cake release, cloth washing or downstream conveying are ignored.

Thickening and conditioning → agitated buffer and feed control → pressure filtration → filtrate segregation and process-water return → cake discharge and handling.
Equipment selection should follow the design basis—not the other way around.
