Post-Blasting Surface Treatment By White fused alumina

White fused alumina is the preferred abrasive for precision metal parts, 3D printed components, stainless steel and aluminum alloy finishing, featuring high hardness, zero iron contamination and excellent self-sharpening performance. White fused alumina blasting creates a uniform, fine matte rough surface on workpieces, effectively removing oxide layers, welding spots, light rust and surface impurities. However, standardized post-blasting treatment is essential to stabilize the blasting effect, improve corrosion resistance and enhance coating adhesion.
1. Complete Residual Sand & Dust Removal
White fused alumina fine particles easily remain in workpiece micropores, gaps and corners. Immediately after blasting, use high-pressure clean air to blow away residual dust and abrasives thoroughly. For complex precision parts, clean with soft brushes to avoid particle residues that cause paint bubbling, peeling and surface defects.
2. Degreasing & Deep Cleaning
After dust removal, wipe the workpiece surface with alcohol or acetone to eliminate oil stains, sweat and dust. White fused alumina blasting can achieve Sa3 super-high cleanliness, and degreasing treatment ensures a pure metal substrate for subsequent processing.
3. Timely Surface Protection & Finishing
The metal surface becomes highly active after blasting and is prone to rapid oxidation and rusting. It is recommended to finish subsequent processing within 4 hours. For workpieces requiring painting, powder coating or electroplating, proceed with coating immediately. The uniform micro roughness formed by blasting greatly improves coating adhesion and prevents peeling. For uncoated workpieces, passivation or anti-rust oil treatment is recommended for long-term anti-corrosion protection.
4. Strict Surface Quality Inspection
Detect surface roughness (standard 50-75μm for precision parts) with a roughness tester. Check uniform texture, no residual sand and no oxidation spots to ensure surface accuracy and flatness, meeting high-standard requirements for medical equipment, molds, engineering machinery parts and precision components.
Conclusion: White fused alumina blasting optimizes the surface base, while professional post-treatment locks the overall quality. It effectively improves workpiece wear resistance, corrosion resistance and coating stability, extending service life and upgrading product grade.

Rock Garnet Sand VS Green Garnet Sand

Rock garnet and green sandblasting garnet represent naturally mined/crushed mineral sand and sandblasting abrasives with specific mineral compositions, respectively. They are not opposing materials, but rather differ physically in particle shape and trace components.
The following is a detailed comparison:
1.Mineral Nature and Classification: Rock Garnet: Primarily refers to natural garnet sand produced by mining vein rocks, followed by crushing, grinding, and sieving. It is mostly almandine, ranging in color from slightly reddish to dark red, with extremely sharp edges.
Green Sandblasting Garnet: In sandblasting abrasives, greenish garnet usually refers to grossular garnet (such as green sand garnet) or garnet containing special mineral symbiotic elements. Because it does not contain free silica, it is often used in environmentally friendly, dust-free sandblasting operations.
2.Morphology and Cutting Performance: Rock Garnet (Angular): Due to being formed from crushed hard rock, the particle surface has sharp, pointed edges. Extremely strong cutting force, making it ideal for precision waterjet cutting or sandblasting requiring high surface roughness in industry.
Green sandblasting garnet (polygonal/spherical): This type of garnet, due to its moderate hardness and good toughness, is often processed into specific mesh sizes for dust-free sandblasting. It can remove oxide scale from metal surfaces with high-speed impact and is not easily embedded in the workpiece.
3.Hardness and density (reference indicators): Rock sand garnet (almandine garnet): Mohs hardness approximately 7.5 (sim 8.0), density approximately 4.0 (sim 4.2 g/cm^3). Due to its high specific gravity, it has high impact kinetic energy during sandblasting, resulting in extremely high rust removal efficiency.
Green sandblasting garnet (mainly grossular garnet): Mohs hardness approximately 7.0 (sim 7.5), relatively light density. Good wear resistance, preventing damage to the substrate during specific paint removal and cleaning of soft metal surfaces.
4.Main Industrial Applications of Rock Sand Garnet: Widely used in high-pressure water jet cutting processes, as well as high-standard sandblasting and rust removal (up to Sa3 highest grade) for steel structures, storage tanks, and ship hulls.
Green Sandblasting Garnet: Specifically designed for surface strengthening, glass etching, surface cleaning of light metals such as aluminum/titanium, and in working environments with extremely high dust and environmental protection requirements.

A Must-Read for Ship Repair: Copper Slag vs. Garnet Sand– How to Choose the Right Blasting Abrasive?

In ship rust removal and coating pretreatment, copper slag and garnet are two common blasting abrasives. Each has its own characteristics, with the main differences as follows:

1. Source and Composition
Copper slag is a by-product in the copper smelting process and belongs to artificial abrasives. Garnet is a naturally mined non-metallic mineral with a stable composition.

2. Hardness and Shape
Garnet has a Mohs hardness of approximately 7.5–8.0, with sharp, angular particles. Copper slag has a slightly lower hardness, and its particles are mostly blocky or brittle in structure.

3. Usage Pattern
Garnet can be recycled 3-5 times, making it suitable for multiple reuses. Copper slag is typically used 1-2 times or as a single-use abrasive without recovery.

4. Blasting Effect
The surface cleanliness of garnet after sandblasting can reach Sa3 level, with uniform roughness and less embedded sand. Copper slag sandblasting can also achieve a relatively good degree of cleanliness, but the characteristics of the surface residues are different.

5. Cost Structure
Copper slag has a lower unit price, but because it is often used only once and has high consumption volume, the total cost should be calculated based on actual working conditions. Garnet has a slightly higher unit price, but it can be recycled, resulting in lower consumption per unit area.

6. Working Environment
Both sandblasting processes will generate a certain amount of dust. The amount of garnet dust is relatively small, while the amount of copper slag dust is slightly higher. Both require corresponding dust prevention measures.

The choice of abrasive depends on the specific process requirements, budget and working conditions of the ship maintenance project. For ship maintenance, long-lasting anti-corrosion is the key. Choosing the right abrasive can make your efforts twice as effective with half the effort!
