Nouryon announced that its production sites in Boxing and Ningbo, China, have received Halal certification for specific ingredients used in personal care and cleaning products. This certification enables Nouryon to serve more global markets and meet internationally recognized ethical and hygiene standards.

"Halal certification is not a niche requirement; it opens doors for us to serve nearly 2 billion consumers in specific markets and regions who require Halal products. With this certification, we are expanding the possibilities for the consumer brands we support and enhancing their competitiveness in high-growth markets," said Brad Pearson, Vice President of Cleaning Products at Nouryon.

The Boxing facility produces fatty amines and quaternary ammonium compounds, which are key ingredients for fabric softeners and cleaning products. The Ningbo facility produces conventional and green chelating agents for household and industrial cleaning products as well as personal care applications.

Nouryon remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of global customers and consumers, providing high-performance and sustainable ingredient solutions for the cleaning and personal care markets. The company has multiple manufacturing sites worldwide and technical support centers to help customers navigate regulatory requirements and optimize formulations according to local market preferences.

Within Nouryon's Consumer and Life Sciences division, these cleaning and personal care products fall under the company's Home and Personal Care business unit, which markets key ingredients that enhance the performance of consumer essentials.

On April 8, 2026, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced its final affirmative determination in the anti-dumping investigation on imports of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) from China.

The final dumping margins are set at 85.11% for Covestro Polymers (China) Co., Ltd., Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd., and its exporter Shandong Mingko Co., Ltd., while other Chinese producers/exporters are assigned a rate of 159.04%.

The products under investigation are primarily classified under U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTSUS) codes 2929.10.8010 and 3909.31.0000.

These final rates represent a significant reduction compared to the preliminary determination issued in early September 2025, when dumping margins ranged from 376.12% to 511.75%.

The United States has long been the largest export market for China’s polymeric MDI. However, affected by the anti-dumping investigation, China’s exports to the U.S. dropped sharply by 82.6% year-on-year during January–October 2025.

The final ruling removes a degree of uncertainty, giving companies some breathing room to reassess and plan their export strategies to the U.S. market.

That said, from an objective standpoint, the 85.11% dumping margin, combined with existing base tariffs, still results in a relatively high overall tariff burden for Chinese MDI in the U.S. market. The ruling effectively lowers “prohibitively high tariffs” to “high tariffs,” meaning Chinese products continue to face a tariff premium compared to competitors from other countries, and profit margins remain under pressure.

Production Down 6%, Profits Cut by $3.7 Billion: Middle East Conflict Hits ExxonMobil Hard

Amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, oil and gas production in the Persian Gulf has been severely disrupted. ExxonMobil reported a 6% decline in global output in Q1, with about half of the drop linked to its LNG project in Qatar, where two production lines were heavily damaged.

The company expects its Energy Products segment profits to fall by $3.7 billion quarter-on-quarter, mainly due to price volatility and cargo timing issues. Repairs to the damaged facilities are expected to take significant time, with no clear timeline yet.

Higher oil and gas prices provided partial support, contributing an estimated $2.5 billion in additional earnings.

Meanwhile, Shell also reported a decline in gas production due to the conflict, though trading gains helped offset some losses.

Qatar, which accounts for around 19% of global LNG exports, has seen about 17% of its capacity offline. Full recovery could take 3–5 years, with force majeure declared on some long-term supply contracts.

On April 7, an explosion struck the Jubail Industrial City in northeastern Saudi Arabia, causing widespread damage.

Located along the coast of the Arabian Gulf, Jubail Industrial City is a cornerstone of the global petrochemical industry, with an annual output of approximately 60 million tons, accounting for about 6% to 8% of global production. Covering an area of over 1,000 square kilometers, the industrial zone hosts a dense network of refineries and chemical plants, making it critical to international energy and manufacturing supply chains.

Numerous major international companies operate projects in the area, including the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), one of the largest petrochemical producers in the Middle East with extensive global investments. The region also includes major joint ventures, such as the Sadara complex developed in partnership with Dow Chemical Company, as well as the Amiral project jointly developed by Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies.

Major disruption in the global polyurethane market 🚨

On March 31, 2026, Sadara Chemical Company, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Dow, announced a full shutdown of its large petrochemical complex in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, with no clear restart timeline.

Sadara is the Middle East’s largest MDI and TDI supplier, accounting for over 90% of the regional market, with an annual production capacity of around 400,000 tons of MDI and 200,000 tons of TDI, representing roughly 3% and 6% of global supply.

The shutdown is caused by supply chain disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions—affecting raw materials, logistics, and exports.

Following the shutdown announcement, Huntsman promptly raised prices for polyurethane and related products in the Chinese market. As of April 2, the reference price for polymeric MDI in China reached around RMB 19,533 per ton, showing a noticeable increase compared to previous levels.
