🔩 B7 vs L7: Which Stud Bolt Is Right for Your Project?
B7 and L7 are two of the most common stud bolts grades in oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and LNG projects. But do you exactly know their differences? Is L7 superior to B7?

In fact, L7 is neither an upgraded version of B7 nor does it offer superior performance. The fundamental differences between the two lie in the standards they adhere to, the heat treatment processes, and their applicable operating temperatures.
ASTM A193 B7
✅ Standards & Materials: ASTM A193; AISI 4140 or similar alloy steel.
✅ Temperatures: High-temperature, high-pressure environments, with a maximum temperature resistance of approximately 450°C.
✅ Applications: High-pressure boilers and piping systems in petrochemical plants, oil refineries, and power stations.

ASTM A320 L7
✅ Standards & Materials: ASTM A320; similar alloy steel but undergoes specialized low-temperature impact testing and heat treatment.
✅ Temperatures: Extremely low-temperature environments, typically below -50°C or even below -101°C.
✅ Applications: LNG terminals, cryogenic storage tanks, cryogenic equipment, pipeline projects in cold regions, etc.

Choice Guide for Different Projects
✅ Select B7: Your project involves high-temperature steam, hot oil piping, or standard industrial high-pressure vessels.
✅ Select L7: Your project equipment must withstand extreme cold, cryogenic media, or the transport of low-temperature liquids; the material must maintain high impact toughness without suffering brittle fracture.

🔩 What Makes Alloy Steel Stronger?

In critical engineering applications, fasteners are required to withstand high loads, extreme temperatures, and demanding operating conditions.

So, what makes alloy steel stronger than conventional carbon steel? The answer lies in controlled alloying elements and advanced heat treatment processes.

By adding elements such as:
🔹 Chromium (Cr) – improves hardenability and wear resistance
🔹 Molybdenum (Mo) – enhances strength at elevated temperatures and improves toughness
🔹 Nickel (Ni) – contributes to toughness and impact resistance

These alloying elements improve key mechanical properties, including:
✅ Higher tensile strength
✅ Better toughness
✅ Improved fatigue resistance
✅ More stable performance under demanding conditions

This is why alloy steel is widely used for industrial fasteners such as ASTM A193 B7, ASTM A193 B16, and ASTM A320 L7 stud bolts, which are commonly specified for oil & gas, petrochemical, and energy applications.

However, strength is not achieved by material composition alone. Proper heat treatment, manufacturing control, and quality inspection are equally important to ensure reliable performance.

📑 How LNG Projects Are Driving Demand for Low-Temperature Fasteners

As global demand for cleaner energy continues to grow, liquefied natural gas (LNG) has become a key part of the world's energy transition. Billions of dollars are directed toward massive liquefaction and export facilities.

Concerning that the natural gas must be super-cooled to -162℃ to turn it into a liquid, standard hardware will become brittle and fracture at these extreme temperatures. That’s why LNG projects are driving demand for low-temperature fasteners.

🕹️ The Cryogenic Challenge
➡️Brittle Failure
➡️Thermal Contraction
➡️Tight Sealing

🕹️ Driving Demand for Specialized Fasteners
To overcome these challenges, LNG facilities rely heavily on specialized materials that can absorb energy at cryogenic temperatures:
➡️Austenitic Stainless Steel: Grades like ISO3506 A2/A4/A5/A8
➡️Low-Temperature Alloy Steel: Fasteners conforming to ASTM A320(such as L7, L7M, and L9,L9M)
➡️Duplex Stainless Steel: D4/D6, such as 2205(D4,1.4462), 2507(D6,1.4410)
➡️Nickel Alloys: A286(ASTM A453 Gr.660,Iron-nickel-based aging alloy), Inconel 718 / Hastelloy C-276

🔩 Why ASTM Standards Matter in Oil & Gas Projects

In the oil & gas industry, fasteners are expected to perform under some of the world's harshest operating conditions—from high-pressure pipelines, refineries, offshore platforms to LNG facilities.

That's why ASTM standards aren't just technical specifications—they're essential for ensuring safety, reliability, and long-term performance. For example:
📌 ASTM A193 B7,B16,B8,B8M,B8T specifies alloy and stainless steel bolting materials for high-temperature or high-pressure service.
📌 ASTM A320 L7,L7M,B8,B8M,B8T covers alloy and stainless steel bolting materials intended for low-temperature applications, where toughness is critical.
📌 ASTM A194 matches heavy hex nuts paired with A193 & A320 stud bolts.

For EPC contractors, engineers, and project owners, selecting fasteners that comply with the appropriate ASTM standards can ensure:
• Reliable mechanical properties
• Consistent material quality
• Suitability for demanding service environments
• Compatibility with international engineering specifications

At JM Hardware®, we manufacture industrial fasteners in accordance with internationally recognized standards to support reliable performance in oil & gas projects.

🔩 Common Fastener Failures in Harsh Environments

In demanding industrial applications, fastener failure is often not caused by a single issue, but by a combination of material selection, environment, and installation conditions.

In harsh environments such as offshore platforms, chemical plants, and high-temperature facilities, common fastener failure modes include:
✅ Corrosion Failure – accelerated by chloride exposure, moisture, and chemical media

✅ Hydrogen Embrittlement – leading to sudden brittle fracture in high-strength bolts

✅ Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) – failure under combined tensile stress and corrosive environment

✅ Thread Stripping – caused by improper tightening or material mismatch

✅ Fatigue Failure – due to cyclic loading in dynamic structures

✅ Overload Fracture – exceeding design load limits

At JM Hardware, fasteners are engineered and tested to improve performance reliability in critical applications, thus reducing failure risks in real-world conditions.

Proper material selection and quality control are essential to ensure long-term structural safety.

🔩 Duplex Stainless Steel vs Standard Stainless Steel: What's the Difference?

When selecting fasteners for demanding environments, not all stainless steels perform the same.

Standard stainless steel typically refers to austenitic stainless steel (e.g., 304, 316) which is widely used in sectors such as construction, food processing, and chemical equipment. Duplex Stainless Steel combines the benefits of austenitic and ferritic stainless steel structures, offering:
✅ Higher Tensile Strength
The yield strength of duplex stainless steel is more than twice that of 304 or 316 stainless steel, making it more suitable for high-pressure and high-load applications.

✅ Superior Chloride Corrosion Resistance
Standard stainless steel may suffer from pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, etc. in high-salt, high-humidity environments, while duplex stainless steel has stronger resistance to chloride ion environments.

✅ Better Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance

✅ Longer Service Life in Harsh Environments
Duplex stainless steel maintains stable performance over the long term, reducing the repair and replacement need.

Compared with standard stainless steel grades such as 304 and 316, duplex stainless steel fasteners are often preferred for:
• Offshore Platforms
• Oil & Gas Facilities
• Desalination Plants
• Marine Applications
• Chemical Processing Equipment

While standard stainless steel remains an excellent choice for general industrial and commercial applications, duplex stainless steel provides an added level of reliability where corrosion and high loads are critical concerns.

If your project faces saltwater exposure, aggressive chemicals, or heavy loads, duplex stainless steel fasteners may be the better investment.
