We all know that daily sewage and wastewater need to be treated before being discharged. Without treatment, there will be many bubbles in the wastewater, which are difficult to eliminate and must be treated with defoamers before being discharged. However, many people do not understand the principle of how to use defoamer and how much to use to just eliminate all foam, so the defoaming effect is not ideal. Now let's learn more about water treatment defoamers!

All defoamers that can destroy the stability of foam can be used for defoaming. At present, there are many types of defoamers for wastewater treatment, which are mainly divided into complex system water treatment, high-temperature water treatment, sewage treatment, general sewage treatment, pulp mill water treatment, etc. Different defoamers are used according to different water properties.

1. Defoamer for wastewater treatment in complex systems
Organic silicon defoamers are generally used for the treatment of complex wastewater systems. For example, RISE CHEMICAL organic silicon defoamers are emulsified with various silicone greases and dispersants, mainly used for circuit board cleaning and various wastewater treatments. They have good compatibility, alkali resistance, and long-lasting defoaming and anti foaming properties. It is recommended to add defoamers before 60 ℃ for the best effect. The dosage should be noted, with 10ppm as the unit. Generally, a dosage of 10-500ppm defoamer can achieve the desired effect.

2. High temperature water treatment defoamer
High temperature water treatment defoamers generally use polyether defoamers, which are resistant to high temperatures and have the advantages of alkali resistance and shear resistance. RISE CHEMICAL has developed high-temperature water treatment defoamers specifically for high-temperature systems, mainly used in areas such as leachate evaporation treatment, circuit boards, metal cleaning, and various high-temperature wastewater treatment. It can be directly added to the foaming system. It is recommended to use a metering pump for continuous dropwise addition, with 10ppm as the unit. Generally, a dosage of 10-500ppm can achieve the desired effect. The actual amount added should be tested on site to achieve the optimal dosage.

3. General sewage treatment defoamer
General sewage and wastewater treatment defoamers, such as RISE CHEMICAL's defoamer products developed for the general sewage treatment field, are prepared using a composite emulsion of silicon emulsifiers and hydrocarbon emulsifiers, suitable for storage at 5-35 ℃. Defoamers have excellent instant defoaming ability and long-term defoaming effect. The dosage is also measured in units of 10ppm, and it is recommended to use a metering pump for continuous dropwise addition. Generally, a dosage of 10-500ppm can achieve the desired effect.

Defoamers are commonly used functional additives in industrial production and water treatment processes. Defoamers have a wide range of applications, including water treatment, papermaking, oil drilling, steel, thermal power plants, and resin paste industries.

The core active ingredients of defoamers include polydimethylsiloxane, dispersants, emulsifiers, and surfactants. Defoamers have the characteristics of easy dispersion, fast defoaming speed, and long-lasting foam inhibition. After use, they will not affect various technical parameters of the system, nor will they cause secondary water pollution. They can adapt to the foam inhibition needs of different scenarios. The scope of application of defoamers is suitable for foaming problems in multiple industries, among which water treatment defoamers designed specifically for water treatment processes have more outstanding adaptability. Water treatment defoamers can be applied not only in various foaming systems of papermaking, oil fields, and power plants, but also in urban sewage treatment processes. The water treatment defoamer adopts an environmentally friendly formula, and the defoamer itself is non-toxic and harmless. Its use in water treatment will not affect bacterial growth and will play a stable role in the system.

In the high-speed, water-intensive world of modern papermaking, efficiency is everything. Yet, a seemingly harmless phenomenon—foam—can bring production lines to a halt and ruin product quality. This is where a specialized papermaking defoamer becomes not just an additive, but a necessity.

Where Does the Foam Come From?
Paper pulp is a complex mixture of water, fibers, and various chemical additives like sizing agents, retention aids, and coatings. Many of these chemicals are surfactants, meaning they reduce surface tension. When this mixture is agitated at high speeds through pumps, screens, and headboxes, air gets trapped, creating stable foam bubbles.

The Hidden Costs of Uncontrolled Foam
Without an effective papermaking defoamer, foam accumulation leads to severe operational issues:
1. Product Defects: Foam bubbles trapped in the paper sheet create holes, spots, or uneven coating, leading to rejected batches.
2. Machine Downtime: Overflowing foam can spill onto machine floors, creating safety hazards and forcing production stops for cleanup.
3. Reduced Efficiency: Foam takes up valuable volume in tanks and chests, effectively reducing the capacity of the pulping system and slowing down drainage on the wire section.
4. Environmental Impact: Excessive foam often leads to increased wastewater treatment costs and potential discharge violations.

How a Papermaking Defoamer Works
A high-quality papermaking defoamer works by entering the foam lamella (the bubble wall), spreading rapidly, and displacing the stabilizing surfactant. This causes the bubble wall to thin and burst instantly. Unlike generic antifoams, a specialized papermaking defoamer is formulated to:
1. Work in Complex Chemistries: Remain effective despite the presence of fillers, dyes, and sizing agents.
2. Ensure Compatibility: Not cause spots or fish-eyes on the final paper surface.
3. Last Longer: Provide sustained control throughout the recycling loop, especially in systems using recovered paper which tends to generate more foam.

In an industry where margins are tight and quality standards are rigorous, controlling foam is non-negotiable. Investing in the right papermaking defoamer ensures smoother operations, higher product quality, and significant cost savings.

Why Paper Defoamer Is Essential for Modern Papermaking
In the papermaking industry, foam is a persistent problem that harms efficiency, quality, and productivity. This is why paper defoamer has become a necessary additive in every stage of production.
During pulping, mixing, and coating, air bubbles create foam that leads to paper defects, slow drainage, equipment blockages, and frequent breaks. Without effective paper defoamer, mills face higher costs and inconsistent output.
A high-quality paper defoamer quickly eliminates existing foam and prevents new foam from forming. Different types—including silicone-based, fatty alcohol-based, and polyether-based paper defoamer—are designed for various process conditions such as high temperature, high alkalinity, and eco-friendly production.
Using the right paper defoamer improves drainage speed, reduces downtime, enhances surface smoothness, and supports environmental compliance. Modern paper defoamer products are low-dosage, stable, and compatible with closed-loop water systems.
At RISE CHEMICAL, we provide professional paper defoamer solutions customized for pulping, wet-end, coating, and wastewater treatment. Our paper defoamer portfolio helps mills improve efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain stable, high-quality paper production.
Paper defoamer is not just a chemical—it is a key solution for reliable, cost-effective papermaking.

For any coating—architectural, industrial, or automotive—a smooth, flawless finish is key. Yet foam formation is a common issue that damages coating appearance and performance. As a professional defoamer manufacturer with 20 years of experience, RISECHEMICAL simplifies the essentials of coating defoamers to help you understand their value.
Why Foam Forms in Coatings

Foam (air/gas bubbles in the coating) occurs during production (mixing/grinding entraps air), application (spraying/rolling introduces air), or due to coating formulation (low surface tension, high viscosity).

The Hazards of Foam
Foam causes surface defects (pinholes, unevenness), reduces coating protection (thinner film, premature wear), and lowers production efficiency (equipment underutilization, uneven packaging).

How Coating Defoamers Work
Defoamers disrupt foam stability by reducing surface tension (penetrating bubble films), forming thin monomolecular films (weakening bubbles), or adsorbing foam-stabilizing surfactants (causing collapse).

Common Types of Coating Defoamers
Different coatings need different defoamers: silicone-based (excellent stability, ideal for waterborne coatings), mineral oil-based (universal, good compatibility), and silicone-free (for high-gloss/ink-compatible scenarios).

Foam is essentially a dispersion system where gas is dispersed within a liquid, and its stability depends on three key factors:
1. Surface tension: Cohesive forces between molecules at the liquid surface form an “elastic membrane” that prevents gas escape;
2. Surfactants: Substances like detergents or proteins adsorb at the gas-liquid interface, reducing surface tension and forming a protective layer;
3. Viscosity: High-viscosity liquids delay bubble rupture, making foam more durable.

The Working Principle of Wastewater Treatment Defoamer
Wastewater treatment defoamers disrupt foam stability through synergistic physical and chemical interactions, with their core mechanism simplified into four stages:
1. Pe*******on: Defomer molecules pe*****te the foam surface. Possessing extremely low surface tension, they rapidly diffuse to the gas-liquid interface, displacing surfactants and weakening the foam's “protective film.”
2. Spreading and Displacement: The defoamer disrupts the foam structure by spreading across the surface to form a monolayer. This “pushes away” surfactants from the interface, increasing local surface tension. According to the Marangoni effect, this tension gradient induces fluid flow, causing the foam walls to thin and rupture.
3. Bridging and Coalescence: Wastewater defoamers accelerate the collapse of certain defoamers (e.g., polyethers) by forming “bridging” structures on foam surfaces, connecting adjacent bubbles to promote coalescence and rupture. Others (e.g., mineral oils) sink to the bubble base due to density differences, further destabilizing the foam.
4. Foam Suppression: Wastewater defoamers prevent regenerated defoamers from dispersing into the liquid as microparticles. They continuously adsorb newly formed surfactants, thereby inhibiting secondary foam formation.

Case Studies of Wastewater Treatment Defoamers
1. Site Overview: A wastewater treatment plant in a Middle Eastern city faced severe foaming issues: excessive foam accumulation in aeration tanks caused equipment clogging and hindered water quality testing. Analysis revealed the primary causes were high detergent (surfactant) content in influent and proteins generated from organic matter decomposition.
2. Solution:
1) Addition of wastewater defoamer: A composite defoamer was selected for its dual capabilities of rapid foam breakdown and long-lasting foam suppression.
2) Application method: Dosage (50-100 ppm) was determined through pilot testing to prevent excessive addition from reducing sludge activity.
3) Synergistic treatment: Combined adjustments to aeration levels and increased carbon source addition optimized the microbial degradation environment.
4) Treatment Effect: Within 30 minutes of application, foam height reduced by 80%; completely dissipated within 2 hours with no recurrence over the subsequent 48 hours, maintaining stable effluent quality compliance.
