A round hole in the flat pattern may not stay round after bending.

Why?

During sheet metal bending, material around the bend zone is stretched and compressed. If a hole is positioned too close to this area, the surrounding material can move with the bend, causing the hole to become distorted or shift from its intended position.

This can become especially important when the hole is used for mounting, alignment, or assembly.

Before finalizing the design, consider:

🔹 Material and sheet thickness
🔹 Inside bend radius
🔹 Hole position relative to the bend
🔹 Tooling and bending method
🔹 Whether the hole is critical for assembly

There isn't one clearance value that fits every bending setup. For critical features near a bend, reviewing the design together with the fabricator before production can help reduce forming and assembly issues.
