Battery storage project funds raise USD 625m in record quarter

2015-Q3 2016. Source: Mercom Capital Group llc

Battery storage residential and commercial project funds have attracted a total of USD 625 million (EUR 574m) in four deals during the third quarter of 2016 compared to USD 175 million in the previous three months.

Clean energy consultancy Mercom Capital Group LLC unveiled these record figures on Monday, saying that Tabuchi America raised the most in July-September 2016 about USD 300 million for residential solar-plus-storage installations. At the same time, on the commercial side, Advanced Microgrid Solutions obtained USD 200 million from Macquarie Capital, while behind-the-meter energy storage systems provider Stem raised up to USD 100 million from Starwood Energy Group.

As per venture capital (VC) funding, battery storage firms raised a total of USD 30 million in nine deals for supercapacitors, lithium-based batteries, energy storage management software, energy storage systems, thermal energy storage and flow batteries. This is significantly lower than the USD 125 million secured in the second quarter of 2016 and the USD 96 million in July-September 2015.

Announced debt and public market financing for battery storage technologies rose to USD 51.6 million from USD 40 million in the second quarter of 2016, with FuelCell raising USD 40 million through the sale of shares and warrants.

There were three merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions from sector firms in Q3 2016, compared to four in Q2 2016.

First utility-scale Tesla battery being installed in Europe
Tesla's utility and business energy storage solution, the Powerpack, is being installed by U.K. developer Camborne Energy Storage alongside a PV plant in Somerset, making it the first large-scale Tesla storage unit to be installed in Europe.

The Tesla Powerpack is the company’s large-scale storage offering that is specifically designed to work with solar PV sites, whether they be utility-scale or commercial in size, as it can be scaled to space, power and energy requirements.

As energy storage solutions become more in vogue in is little surprise to see big global brands such as Tesla muscling in on the industry. This landmark event is just the latest move that Tesla has made in various energy storage markets around the world, as the company looks to become one of the top global providers of residential- and utility-scale storage solutions.

The Tesla Powerpack is the company’s large-scale storage offering that is specifically designed to work with solar PV sites, whether they be utility-scale or commercial in size, as it can be scaled to space, power and energy requirements.

U.K.-based developer Camborne Energy Storage is working with EPC Poweri services for the installation, that is being completed at a ground-mounted solar PV site in Somerset. Camborne hopes that this solution will prove successful, as it looks to deploy battery storage across the U.K.

“The development of Tesla’s first European grid-tied system is an exciting step forward for Camborne and Tesla in terms of our respective storage strategies,” commented Managing Director of Camborne Dan Taylor. “The project is another success for storage development in the U.K. and being co-located with a renewable generation site, should offer significant benefits to all stakeholders.”

Incorporating such energy storage units is moving the energy system in the right direction, as it will help it improve efficiency and allow it to more easily incorporate renewable energy sources. Tesla has already set its stall out as a major player in the energy storage market, and installed its first residential offering to a home PV array earlier in the year.

Japan will pour $30 billion of investments into Africa by 2018, including $10 billion in infrastructure development, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Saturday at a summit in Nairobi. Abe is using the conference to meet dozens of leaders from across Africa, among them Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta and South Africa's Jacob Zuma. It is the first time that the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) is being held in Africa, with all five previous events hosted in Japan.

"When combined with the investment from the private sector I expect the total real amount to be $30 billion (26.8 billion euros)," Abe said as the TICAD summit got underway. That figure includes $9 billion yet to be spent from pledges made at the previous TICAD conference in 2013.

"This is an investment that has faith in Africa's future," he said. The goal of the conference, organised jointly by the UN, the African Union, the World Bank and Japan, is to boost trade and aid to Africa, as Japan hopes that quality will trump quantity in the battle against cash-rich China for influence on the continent. While Tokyo already has a well-established presence in Africa, its financial importance to the continent has long been eclipsed by regional archrival China.

The world's second-largest economy - a resource-hungry giant - recorded total trade with Africa of about $179 billion in 2015, dwarfing Japan's approximately $24 billion. Some 30 African heads of state are taking part in the conference, which runs until Sunday. Around 70 agreements are expected to be signed. "We have a feeling in our gut that in Africa, where possibilities abound, Japan can grow vigorously," said Abe.

"The wealthiest countries today, with very few exceptions, got rich by trading with others," President Uhuru Kenyatta said at the conference. Chad's Idriss Deby, who currently chairs the African Union, noted that Africa's economy had been badly affected by falling commodity prices, several conflicts and climate change. "Our struggle for development cannot succeed without peace, stability and above all security," he said. Deby called on Africa's partners to contribute to a counter-terrorism fund recently set up by the African Union and to help speed up economic growth, poverty reduction and promote better health care. The World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria meanwhile pledged $24 billion over the next three to five years towards Africa's efforts to achieve universal health coverage.
