Selecting Explosion-Proof Lighting: Gas Groups & T-Class
Lumens don't matter if your fixture fails gas group or temperature class.

Gas Groups (IIC, IIB, IIA) are based on MESG (Maximum Experimental Safe Gap). IIC gases like hydrogen need the tightest flame path. An IIA fixture (methane) must never go into IIB or IIC zones – the gap is too large.

Temperature Class vs. Auto-Ignition Temperature: T6 = 85°C max, T4 = 135°C, T3 = 200°C. Your T-rating must be lower than the gas's ignition temperature. T4 fixture at 135°C where gas ignites at 120°C? That's a fail.

Real example – Ethylene: AIT 425°C, gas group IIB. You need Ex db IIB T3 Gb. T3 gives 200°C max – safe margin.

Common field errors: IIA fixture in IIB zone. T4 where T5 is required. Trusting a "general ATEX" logo without checking the full marking.

HEXLON – every HLBD fixture carries full gas group and T-class markings, not just a logo.

3 Key Facts About Explosion-Proof Distribution Boxes & Electrical Enclosures

In hazardous environments, standard enclosures are not an option. Here’s what you need to know to ensure safety and compliance:

1️⃣ Certification Matters
Look for ATEX, IECEx, or NEMA ratings. These confirm the enclosure is designed to contain internal explosions and prevent ignition of surrounding gases or dust.

2️⃣ Material Choice Impacts Durability
Stainless steel, aluminum, and polycarbonate each offer different advantages. Steel provides maximum strength, aluminum balances weight and corrosion resistance, while polycarbonate suits intrinsically safe applications.

3️⃣ Application-Specific Design is Critical
Customization options — from size and mounting to ingress protection (IP/IK ratings) — ensure the enclosure performs reliably in your specific hazardous zone (Zone 1, 2, 21, 22).

Why this matters:
Certified enclosures protect your people, your assets, and your compliance record.

HEXLON delivers ATEX/IECEx certified distribution boxes and enclosures — engineered with robust materials and tailored to your application.

What is explosion-proof electrical equipment?
If your facility handles flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust, you’ve probably heard the term. But here’s what it really means:

👉 It’s NOT about making equipment "bomb-proof."
👉 It IS about preventing ignition and containing any internal fault so the outside environment stays safe.

These systems are built for hazardous zones — Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21, Zone 22 — and follow strict international standards like ATEX and IECEx.

Common protection methods:
🔹 Ex d (Flameproof) – contains explosions
🔹 Ex i (Intrinsic Safety) – limits energy
🔹 Ex e (Increased Safety) – prevents sparks/overheating
🔹 Ex p (Pressurization) – blocks hazardous gases

Typical equipment includes:
Control panels, distribution boxes, circuit breakers, isolators, lighting, and junction boxes.

Choosing a qualified manufacturer matters. Look for certifications, engineering experience, and integrated solutions — not just individual products.

With 17 years in explosion-proof solutions, HEXLON delivers certified safety across oil & gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, and marine industries.

LED vs Traditional Explosion-Proof Lighting: Which One Wins?

When it comes to hazardous environments, your lighting choice affects safety, energy costs, and long-term reliability.

Why LED Outperforms Traditional:
💡 Energy Savings – LED uses up to 90% less energy than incandescent or HID fixtures. Lower electricity bills, less heat output.
⏳ Lifespan – LEDs last 50,000–100,000 hours vs. 10,000–20,000 hours for traditional. Fewer replacements, less downtime.
🔧 Maintenance – Traditional lights need frequent bulb and ballast changes. LED fixtures are virtually maintenance-free.
🛡️ Safety – LEDs generate significantly less heat, reducing ignition risks. Both use robust enclosures, but LED runs cooler.
🌱 Environmental – LED contains no mercury, unlike fluorescent lamps. Easier disposal, lower environmental impact.
📊 Cost – Higher upfront cost, but typical ROI within 2 years. Savings of over $200 per fixture over its lifetime.

HEXLON LED Explosion-Proof Lighting delivers certified safety (ATEX, IECEx) with smart wireless technology for easier installation and maintenance.

How Explosion-Proof Cable Glands Stop Ignition Hazards

In hazardous environments, even a small spark can trigger a disaster. That’s where explosion-proof cable glands come in.

What they do:
🔒 Seal cable entry points to block flammable gases & dust
🔥 Contain sparks and flames inside the gland
🛡️ Protect equipment from mechanical strain and moisture

Why it matters:
✅ Prevents ignition at the source
✅ Compliant with ATEX, IECEx, NEC standards
✅ Built with robust materials: brass, stainless steel, aluminum
✅ IP66/IP68 sealing for harsh conditions

Choose the right gland for your zone:
• Zone 1/2 → Flameproof (Ex d) or Barrier glands
• Zone 21/22 → Dust-tight sealing with high IP ratings

HEXLON delivers certified, reliable cable glands designed for oil & gas, chemical, mining, and more.
