Why does a garment still look wrong even when the sewing looks clean?

One common reason is grainline.

If a panel is cut off-grain, the garment may:
- sit incorrectly on the body
- twist after cutting
- show the print in a less balanced way

For printed and fitted garments, grain direction affects more than cutting accuracy. It affects the final result.

The same colour does not make two lace trims equivalent.
Motif, width, scalloped edge, mesh, stretch and hand feel all affect the final garment. Once one lace is approved, the factory should link the physical swatch to the specification and verify the actual trim before sewing.
Otherwise, a “similar” substitute can trigger sample rejection, another approval round and extra lead time.
Lock the trim before the next sample.

Sometimes the visible fit issue is not caused by sewing alone. It begins with the wrong pattern version.

These real fit records show that the pattern pieces used for the sample did not follow the approved shapes. The curves and widths were visibly different. Once the base is wrong, small sewing adjustments may improve one area, but they cannot consistently rebuild the whole approved fit.

The safer process is to overlay matching pieces, compare curves, notches and widths, confirm the correct revision, remove obsolete versions and release one controlled master before the next sample or bulk cutting.

A tight armhole may be the symptom—not the complete problem.
This fit review showed a linked balance issue: an over-curved princess line, a high armhole, restrictive binding, and a bodice that no longer hung correctly.
The correction was also linked: release the binding, scoop the armhole by 1/2 inch, restore 1/2 inch at the side-seam top, and recheck the complete bodice. When the princess-seam shaping still did not hold cleanly, the front was rebuilt with two darts.
Good fit development does not adjust one point in isolation. It checks what every change does to the whole garment.

A 1/8-inch difference can remain clearly visible through sheer mesh.
In this first-fit sample, the neckline seam allowance was 1/2 inch while the clear elastic covering it was only 3/8 inch. The excess edge extended beyond the elastic and showed through the transparent fabric as a dark band.
For a cleaner and more repeatable neckline, the elastic width, trimmed seam allowance and edge coverage must be checked together—especially around the full curve.

A neckline ruffle may look unstable even when the neckline itself is correctly shaped.

If the ruffle is too deep and the gathering is too sparse, the edge can flap over instead of standing cleanly around the curve. The practical fix starts before attachment: set the finished depth, distribute the gathers evenly, and shape the strip to match the neckline.

For PP approval, check finished depth, even ruching, and edge stability together.
