This is one of the most common questions and one of the most difficult to answer because it depends entirely on the equipment, the level of filtration, the cleanliness of the air in the immediate environment of the fabric duct systems and the type of material used and also the type of diffusion used.
Fabric ducts should be flushed for one of several reasons:
(1) The duct has become clogged with dust and is causing system inefficiency and loss of performance. This is actually rarer than you might think and is usually due to poor filtration management in equipment using permeable fabric ducting with only microperforations. This duct should be turned inside out and vacuumed to remove most of the dust before washing.
(2) The duct has signs of dirt on the outside and is no longer aesthetically pleasing. This is dust from the room in which it deposits on the fabric duct and also that has crawled inside and settled in the duct, usually near the laser cut perforations or the diffusion band. There is normally no loss of performance in this situation and this fabric duct can be cleaned, vacuumed or removed and washed depending on the internal level of dust accumulation.
(3) Hygiene requirements of the room / system require regular cleaning. This is usually a food or cleanroom situation and cleaning is carried out as a requirement of the hygiene systems within the organization rather than a lack of performance or visible dust deposits.
From our perspective, we insist on cleaning annually as part of the terms and conditions of our warranty, Other than this, it is really a matter of common sense and the above guidelines.
It is fair to say that, over time, most DUCTecoL Textile Duct systems will benefit from being removed and cleaned. The appropriate time will be when access is available and the system is no longer required (unless you have a spare system so that rotational cleaning can take place).
