What if a city park could introduce you to every tree in it? 🌳🌳🌳

In Nis, that is now real. 💚

Trees at Trg kralja Aleksandra have been given digital "ID cards." Scan the QR code on the info board and discover the story of the tree in front of you, from wild apple to weeping sophora and cedar.

The signage was created by students of the Faculty of Economics, University of Nis, together with international peers during the 18th International Summer School of Economics. They mapped and documented each tree, then installed the boards, turning a public square into a living classroom for everyone, from schoolchildren to older citizens.

🌿 Have you noticed something new on the trees at King Alexander Square? 🌳

The CROSS-REIS Living Lab has turned the heart of Niš into an open-air laboratory for urban biodiversity! During the 18th International Summer School of Economics, international students inventoried the square's trees, gave them names, and installed QR-code boards — so now anyone can scan and instantly learn about the nature around them.

It's a city becoming a living classroom, where everyone plays a part in protecting urban nature. 💚

Huge thanks to the Faculty of Economics, University of Niš and the Municipal Assembly of Medijana for making it happen.

CROSS-REIS Living Lab 🌿🌳🌱

🌳 Today, the CROSS-REIS Living Lab came to life in Niš!

We brought together researchers, local stakeholders, and international students to co-create innovative Nature-Based Solutions in King Alexander Square.

The Living Lab combined urban biodiversity, citizen engagement, and digital innovation. Through tree labelling with QR codes and collaborative activities, participants explored how public spaces can become living classrooms that support research, environmental awareness, and community participation.

This pilot initiative demonstrates how Living Labs can generate valuable knowledge on circular economy, urban biodiversity, and regenerative development—creating a model that can be scaled to other cities.

🎥 CROSS-REIS expertise featured on Bloomberg Adria

Following the SymOrg FON 2026 Conference, CROSS-REIS team member Assoc. Prof. Saša Čegar, Vice-Dean for Internationalization and Sustainable Development at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Rijeka, joined Bloomberg Adria's programme Zoom In to discuss an increasingly important question:

"How well are education and the labour market aligned? Has the labour market outpaced education?"

The interview explores how rapid technological change, digital transformation, and evolving labour market demands are reshaping the skills required for the future, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration between higher education, business, and policymakers.

These topics are closely aligned with the mission of the CROSS-REIS project, which promotes research excellence, innovation ecosystems, and evidence-based approaches to supporting Europe's green and digital transitions.
