A New Chapter in Innovation: Project Successfully Completed! 🎉

We are proud to announce the successful completion of our IPANEMA project, now officially closed with the submission of the final report. This milestone is a testament to the incredible effort, collaboration, and innovation demonstrated by our diverse consortium.

Over the course of the project, we achieved remarkable results:

➡️270.58 person-months of inter-institutional secondments;
➡️73 scientific publications shared with the global research community;
➡️29 novel prototypes developed;
➡️1 groundbreaking technical solution;
➡️1 granted PCT and 1 ongoing PCT application.

This project has strengthened collaboration across institutions, driven innovation, and created a lasting impact across healthcare, agrifood, and environmental monitoring.

✨ With officially concluded, we continue to highlight the remarkable achievements it has generated!

📢 Another important scientific contribution from our partners has been published in the journal ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering.

📖 The article, titled "Assessing Campylobacter jejuni Extracellular Vesicle–Host Interaction Using a Microfluidic Platform with Caco-2 Spheroids-on-Chip", is authored by Silvia Tea Calzuola*, Jasmina Vidic, et al. — with both representing INRAE & TECH as proud members of the IPANEMA consortium.

🔬 This study provides new insights into pathogen–host interactions using advanced microfluidic systems.

🌱 IPANEMA’s impact extends far beyond the project’s lifetime, fueling scientific breakthroughs and innovations in and research.

Secondments Storytime
✨ Three researchers on secondments! Host Institution – MycoMedica d.o.o. in Slovenia.

During their secondments, ESRs from the BioSense Institute– Ivana Milošević, Milica Govedarica, and Luka Isakov – delved into diverse scientific challenges, combining hands-on lab work with skill-building opportunities in both academic and industrial settings.

🔬 Ivana and Milica enhanced their expertise in microfluidics and bioanalytical systems, with structured training sessions organized in collaboration with Università degli Studi di Padova. There, they deepened their knowledge of chip design, sensor integration, and biotechnology product development, while also sharpening essential soft skills through multidisciplinary teamwork.

🧫 Luka focused on fungal cultivation and the extraction of bioactive compounds at MycoMedica, as well as hydrogel synthesis and 3D printing at the University of Maribor. His secondment contributed to advancing biomanufacturing techniques using DLP technology and optimizing hydrogel-based bioinks.

🚀 A secondment full of learning, innovation, and international collaboration — bridging academia and industry to push scientific boundaries!

🚀 Within the IPANEMA 2020 project – from Serbia to Argentina, science without borders!

Our young researchers from the Agronomy group (BioSense Institute) – Nevena Stevanović, Maša Budjen, and Nikola Stanković – are currently at the University of Buenos Aires, working hand in hand with research colleagues from Argentina on an exciting field experiment.

The study focuses on different nitrogen fertilizer levels, the use of paper-based sensors, and the Plant-o-Meter sensor across various genotypes.

This international collaboration is a great step forward in connecting knowledge, technology, and innovation in agriculture. 🌍

We’re excited to see the results at the end of the season! 🌱📊

Highlights from Dr. Ivana Gadjanski and Dr. Mila Djisalov's secondments! ✨ During their time abroad, the BioSense Institute scientists attended the NEXT-GEN SENSORS - IPANEMA INNOVATORS event, visited 2M Pharma Group where they gained hands-on experience in biotech workflows, and collaborated with Microssistemas e Nanotecnologias on nucleic acid-based pathogen detection systems.

Today we had a fantastic at BioSense Institute, diving into the product development pipeline — from ideation to sales — and exploring what effective R&D looks like in a company setting.

A big thank you to our speakers from 2M Pharma Group:
- Mauro da Silva, Managing Director & Partner at 2M Pharma, who shared insights on product development and
- Dr. Verónica Martins, R&D Manager at 2M Pharma, who walked us through how R&D works in practice.

This workshop was especially valuable for participants from partner institutions who recently completed secondments at 2M Pharma.

During their secondments, ESRs from BioSense Institute: Aleksandra Pavlovic, Minja Mladenovic, Mirjana Mundžić, and Marija Pavlović explored exciting scientific directions. In addition to training in the development of biotechnological production of fungal-based products at Mycomedica, they engaged in specialized research activities:
Aleksandra studied skin pe*******on and biocompatibility of organosilica nanoparticles at the Univerza v Mariboru - University of Maribor, guided by Dr. Marko Milojevic and Dr. Boštjan Vihar.
Minja, Mirjana, and Marija visited the laboratory of by Prof. Dr. Elisa Cimetta at the Università degli Studi di Padova, where they received advanced training in nanomaterials, 3D bioprinting, and extracellular vesicle isolation.

A unique experience of knowledge exchange, skill-building, and collaboration across borders! 🌍💡

Maria Zolotareva from INESC MN completed a secondment in MycoMedica d.o.o. and during her stay she visited Univerza v Mariboru! 🌍 Her secondment explored exciting collaboration opportunities, uniting shared interests in the cytoprotective powers of mushrooms, advanced in-vitro research models, and cutting-edge nucleic acid detection tools. A fruitful step toward innovative science across borders! 💡✨

Prof. Dr. Željko D. Popović from University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Sciences (Prirodno-matematički fakultet Novi Sad (zvanična stranica)) completed his secondment at 2M Pharma Group as part of the project! During his stay, he presented his research and engaged in insightful discussions with the 2M Pharma team, Verónica Martins (R&D Manager) and Mauro da Silva (General Director). A great example of how secondments foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and new research perspectives!
