HS 2231+2441 is an EA type (Algol) eclipsing system with a period of 2h 40m. This short period makes it very easy to observe a complete cycle in a single run. It is also an HW Vir-type system, which is defined as a system consisting of a hot subdwarf and a much cooler red or brown dwarf companion. This fact causes a significant reflection effect on the light curve. The reflection effect in HW Vir-type binaries is the periodic brightening and dimming caused by the heated face of the cool companion reflecting and re-emitting light from the hot primary. It makes their light curves show large out-of-eclipse variations, even without eclipses.
