🚀 EXCELSIOR H2020 Teaming | Consortium Meeting
On 18 June 2026, the EXCELSIOR consortium convened online for a productive meeting focusing on progress under Reporting Period 5, and advancing the next phase of implementation with a focus on impact.
📌 Key highlights discussed included:
• Preparation for the RP5 Review Meeting in autumn 2026
• Progress on post-project strategic collaboration with the Advanced Partners, strengthening the Centre’s long-term sustainability
• 🇪🇺 Organization and contribution to high-level events under the Cyprus EU Presidency, enhancing the project and Centre’s visibility and impact
• Advancements in the Cyprus Atmospheric Remote Observing (CARO) facility, strengthening data provision and research capabilities
• Continued implementation of capacity building activities, secondments, and demonstration projects, with an emphasis on quality and impact
• Progress in maritime sector projects, delivering innovative near real-time EO-based services to end users
As the EXCELSIOR project moves towards its final phase, the consortium remains committed to delivering high-impact results, reinforcing strategic partnerships, and consolidating the long-term sustainability and growth of the ERATOSTHENES CoE. On Thursday, 18 June, Dr. Christiana Papoutsa and Dr. Menelaos Stavrinides, and Mr. Thrasos Stylianou from the Agriculture cluster, accompanied by Dr. Mahmoud Mardini from the Cultural Heritage cluster, visited the village of Akaki in the Nicosia district to meet with local farmers and learn about their work first-hand: what they grow, the challenges they are facing, and where the new technologies of our Centre might be able to help.

The visit was a chance to listen to the farming community directly and to share some of the projects the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence is working on to support agriculture on the ground, especially on topics related to carbon farming (Carbonica), pest and disease monitoring (CERBERUS ) and digital farming (Digifarm).

We would like to thank Ms. Eleni Georgopoulou, the President of the Community Council of Akaki, for hosting and meeting us, and Mr. Kostas Tofitziki and Mr. Georgos Orphanides, the local farmers who arranged the meeting and generously shared their time and insights.

We look forward to taking the next steps and to collaborating with local communities and farmers across the different district areas of Cyprus.

🚀KPMG Cyprus and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence announce strategic collaboration

KPMG in Cyprus and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a strategic cooperation framework in areas of shared scientific and commercial interest.
Through this agreement, the two organisations commit to jointly advancing innovation, research, and technology driven solutions in Cyprus and internationally.
The collaboration will focus on:
🔹Technology and Innovation Support, including the joint promotion of advanced B2B and B2G solutions in fields such as space technologies, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, agrotech, maritime safety, and disaster risk assessment.
🔹Research Collaboration, enabling joint participation in research and innovation projects aligned with the expertise and strategic priorities of both parties.
🔹Market Development, supporting access to local and international networks for innovative technologies, services, and solutions.

🌊 May was a milestone month for the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence.

As part of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 ERATOSTHENES actively contributed to five flagship European events, bringing Earth Observation, space technologies, innovation, and science based solutions to the forefront of European discussions.

One of the highlights was “Riding the Wave: Advancing the EU Ocean Pact through Science, Innovation and Cooperation”, an official event of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026, jointly organised by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, and the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI).

The conference brought together policymakers, researchers, innovators, industry leaders, investors, and stakeholders from across Europe and beyond to explore how ocean science, innovation, and technology can support evidence based policymaking, sustainable blue growth, and the implementation of the EU Ocean Pact.

ERATOSTHENES played an active role throughout the programme. Opening the conference, Prof. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Managing Director of the ERATOSTHENES CoE, highlighted the growing importance of Earth Observation and space technologies in supporting ocean governance, climate resilience, maritime awareness, environmental monitoring, and evidence based decision making for Europe’s sustainable future.

ERATOSTHENES was also represented in the high level plenary session “Advancing Ocean Governance through Science and Innovation: Strengthening Ocean Governance for the EU Ocean Pact”, where Dr Christodoulos Mettas contributed to the discussion on strengthening ocean governance through research, technology, and innovation.

On the second day, ERATOSTHENES contributed to the session “From Lab to Ocean: Europe’s Innovation Success Stories” through the participation of Dr Kyriacos Themistocleous and Dr Michalis Mavrovouniotis, highlighting how research, innovation, Earth Observation, AI, and advanced data infrastructures can support the transition from scientific excellence to market ready solutions and societal impact.

The conference demonstrated the critical role that research and innovation organisations such as ERATOSTHENES play in bridging science, policy, and industry, while contributing to Europe’s vision for a sustainable, resilient, and competitive blue economy.

A productive meeting today through our Cluster with the Limassol Tourism Board and the Limassol Chamber of Commerce & Industry who are actively engaged in the promotion of Limassol's district cultural heritage.

We presented the projects and activities our cluster is driving, and the Limassol Tourism Board shared theirs, from the Historical City Centre Route to Limassol's historical monuments, museums, and living wine and gastronomic heritage.

A lot of synergies were discussed, so we agreed to take our initial engagement forward and start implementing common activities together soon.

Many thanks to Andri Stavrou for facilitating and making this meeting happen, and it was a pleasure to meet the General Manager of the Limassol Tourism Board Ms christina kanellaki, along with Ms. Natalie Savva. Also many thanks for Mr. Michalis Stylianou for his support throughout the meeting.

Το έργο Nemesis-Soil, με συντονιστή το ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, σας προσκαλεί στην εναρκτήρια συνάντηση του Κυπριακού Ζωντανού Εργαστηρίου για την Υγεία του Εδάφους, μια ημέρα αφιερωμένη στη συνεργασία, τη συνδημιουργία και την καινοτομία για την αντιμετώπιση της ερημοποίησης στην Κύπρο. Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης θα συζητηθούν:
