🌍 The CO2 Pacman project once again took center stage at the EuroXR Summer School 2026, hosted by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in collaboration with Alliance4XR, demonstrating how Extended Reality can support environmental education, sustainability, and public engagement.

As part of the Summer School, Vasilis Petrou, Software Engineer at Geoimaging Ltd, delivered the interactive lecture "XR in Energy and Environmental Systems", where the CO2PACMAN VR experiences were presented as real-world case studies throughout the session. Participants explored how immersive technologies can communicate complex energy and environmental challenges by combining accurate terrain reconstruction, real geographic data, realistic scale, and immersive storytelling.

Using examples from the CO2PACMAN project, the lecture walked participants through the complete design process of an XR experience—from breaking down a real-world problem into smaller design decisions, to creating meaningful interactions and immersive educational content. The session emphasized practical, hands-on thinking, encouraging attendees to approach XR development through real scenarios rather than theory alone.

A particularly enjoyable part of the lecture was the collaborative workshop, where participants formed groups to brainstorm their own XR applications inspired by the methodologies presented. The resulting concepts showcased the versatility of XR, with ideas ranging from Mars exploration, road-crossing safety in Greece, and medical surgery training, to fire safety simulations.

It is especially rewarding to see the CO2PACMAN project being featured for a second consecutive year at the EuroXR Summer School, continuing to inspire students, researchers, and professionals while demonstrating how EU-funded projects can extend their impact beyond research through education, knowledge transfer, and immersive learning.

Οι εμπειρίες παρουσιάστηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια των Living Labs "The Island I Would Like", όπου τοπικές κοινωνίες, δημόσιες αρχές, φοιτητές και άλλοι ενδιαφερόμενοι φορείς είχαν την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουν από πρώτο χέρι τις προτεινόμενες μεταμορφώσεις.

CO2 Pacman Lab – Elba Island

At GEOIMAGING, we brought design plans to life through an immersive VR experience, bridging real-world presence with future energy scenarios.

🎥 Starting from a real-world interaction and transitioning inside the VR, the experience allowed participants to step into possible futures of Elba’s energy landscape.

Inside the simulation, users explored two key scenarios:

🔹 Quarry PV Park

From an aerial overview down to ground level, participants observed how photovoltaic systems integrate into the landscape, understanding layout, scale, and functionality up close.

🔹 Near-Shore Wind Farm (14 turbines)

A dynamic journey—from the coastline to the top of a wind turbine, and even a hot air balloon perspective—offering a full spatial understanding of wind energy deployment.

Our goal: make energy transition tangible, interactive, and open to discussion.

Great to see citizens and stakeholders engaging, questioning, and reflecting while inside the scenarios—not just looking at them.
