We are proud to share our latest publication from Ústav fyzikální chemie J. Heyrovského AV ČR, J. Heyrovský Institute in MDPI's Molecules in the Special Issue: Nano and Micro Materials in Green Chemistry ♻️

In this work, we demonstrate low-temperature propane oxidative dehydrogenation over alumina-supported Cu nanoparticles, achieving selectivity and up to 100% propylene selectivity using CO₂ as a mild oxidant.

On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the Student Catalytic Seminar took place at Masaryk University in Brno. Twenty one students from Czech Universities and from Ústav fyzikální chemie J. Heyrovského AV ČR, J. Heyrovský Institute participated in this seminar as well as experts on catalysis.

Our third-year bachelor student, Petr Vítek delivered an oral presentation titled: “Atomically Precise CuPd Pentamer Clusters for Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Cyclohexene“. His work was recognized as one of the three best presentations of the seminar. We congratulate him on his success and wish for a promising and successful future.

👩‍🔬 👉 Otevřená Věda 2026 Internship

On January 9, 2026, Elen Flanderková, a second-year student at secondary school Gymnázium Omská in Prague, began her year-long scientific internship within the Otevřená věda (Open Science) 2026 program. Under the supervision of Petr Vítek at the Oddělení nanokatalýzy, Department of Nanocatalysis at the Ústav fyzikální chemie J. Heyrovského AV ČR, J. Heyrovský Institute, Elen will focus her research on atomically precise subnanometer clusters.

The topic of the internship is “Subnanometer clusters as high performance catalysts”. Her work involves testing these clusters utilizing techniques such as mass spectrometry. She will work with potential catalysts for industry-relevant chemical reactions, contributing to state-of-the-art research in material science. Subnanometer clusters represent the frontier of catalysis, offering the potential to drastically reduce the amount of precious metals needed for industrial chemical production.

🎊Success of our bachelor’s student at Student Scientific Conference at UCT Prague 👨‍🔬

Our third-year bachelor’s student, Petr Vítek (second from the left), participated in the Student Scientific Conference held at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague. He delivered an oral presentation in the Chemical Engineering I section titled:
“Atomically Precise CuPd Pentamer Clusters for Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Cyclohexene”.
His presentation earned him a first place award.
This achievement underscores the high level of commitment and potential of early-career researchers at the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry.

🔬✨ We were honored to welcome Dr. Soňa Ehlerová, member of the Academic Council of Akademie věd České republiky, to our Nanocatalysis Laboratories on Friday 7th November

🧫 Our team, led by Štefan Vajda, introduced Dr. Ehlerová, an astrophysicist studying the interstellar environment, the structure of the Milky Way and star formation, to our research on nanostructured catalysts.

⚗️🌱 She also visited several other labs involved in the AMULET and SPACE ERA CHAIR projects during her tour.

A big thank you to Dr. Ehlerová for her visit and inspiring discussion! 🙌

👩‍🔬🧑‍🔬👨‍🔬 Fourteen attendees from the "Letní Škola NANO2025," organized by Květoslava Stejskalová, visited two of our laboratories on 19th of August. They received an introduction to the catalysis of clusters and nanoparticles by our bachelor student, Petr Vítek.

The excursion included a visit to the laboratory dedicated to cluster deposition, equipped with two cluster deposition apparatuses. During the visit, participants were learned about the cluster preparation technique utilizing magnetron sputtering in combination with cluster mass selection to produce atomically precise clusters. In the second part of he visit, they were shown the laboratory with setups designed to test catalytic performance, with an overview of the reactions, used to test the prepared catalysts.
