VIPER REXUS

VIPER REXUS The experiment deals with the possibility of melting into ice with a heated object under the influence of micro gravity.

One of Saturn's moons, Enceladus, has an icy surface, covering an ocean. In this ocean, there could be evidence for life. To get there, a probe needs to melt through the ice. So far, there haven't been any experiments dealing with melting into ice in vaccum under micro gravity conditions. We are designing an experiment to gather some information to this problem. Therefor, a probe is heated up to a

constant temperature and is pressed on an ice block with a spring to melt into the ice. The ice block's walls are temperature-stabilized to determine conductive losses through the ice. The process will be analyzed by sensors and an optical and IR camera. The process will take place in low-pressure conditions (pressure below 6 mbar) and under the influence of micro-gravity. It is planned to have three ice samples on the experiment for redundancy or to sample three different kinds of ice. Melting into the samples will occure simultaneously to have the longest possible experiment time.

Hey, nehmt euch ein paar Minuten Zeit, um dem Rektorat, dem Fachbereich und dem ASTA eure Meinung zum Studium ohne Hörsaal mitzuteilen! 😁

Exactly one year ago, on 4th of March 2019, our experiment was launched at Esrange Space Centre. We had an amazing time with REXUS, and enjoyed a very nice closing ceremony in November last year. We're still working on our results and wish all the best for the next REXUS project at FH Aachen UAS, Micromoon!!

This is the video of our launch onboard REXUS 23. We enjoyed nice weather and an excellent view while our late access team struggled with the temperature of -32°C.

The REXUS 23 sounding rocket was launched from Esrange Space Center in northern Sweden earlier this week, carrying a set of student-built experiments to the edge of space! The rocket lifted off at 09:50 CET on 4 March and reached an altitude of just over 75 km, before completing its parabolic trajectory and landing about 40 km away from the space centre. REXUS 23 hosted five student experiments, two sponsored by ESA Education and three sponsored by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). The payloads were recovered on the same day by helicopter, and the teams are now working hard to analyse their results. See https://www.esa.int/Education/ESA_Academy/REXUS_23_Launched
