Aller Aqua Research & Development

Aller Aqua Research & Development R&D, with its research center and a network of associated partners, is consistently seeking for innovations and improvements.

Scientific documentation and regular benchmarking of recent products ensure constant, high-quality products. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Continuous development of existing and new feed types and the evaluation of raw materials for fish nutrition is the responsibility of our Research & Development Department. By a dedicated team, feeds for different species and raw materials are tested under laborator

y and field conditions. TRIAL STATION

The testing of feed and raw materials is performed at our own trial station in Germany, Aller Aqua Research. FIELD TRIALS

In close partnership with fish farmers, successful laboratory trials are scaled up and re-evaluated under field conditions. When field trials confirm positive results, new feed types are released into market or raw materials are integrated into Aller Aqua’s raw material basket.

ALLER AQUA RESEARCH VISITS TANZANIA

The Tanzanian aquaculture sector is developing at a tremendous speed. Not only does Tanzania have the greatest share of water surface of Lake Victoria but also has a large coastline. Its potential for both freshwater and marine aquaculture is huge, and it is tapping that potential at a fast pace.
Aller Aqua’s dedication to supporting the African aquaculture sector remains strong. We at Aller Aqua Research were therefore happy to support our African Sales Team on a trip across the country to evaluate our clients’ development and to gain a better understanding of the challenges they face and to work on solutions together to overcome them.
The meetings with various fish farming cooperatives and farm owners confirmed that our efforts are adding positive value to the aquaculture sector. The stakeholders praised our feeds for the quick growth and healthy fish that result from feeding Aller Aqua’s high quality fish feed. They report higher profits and many now see the possibility of expanding their farming operations. New net pens are being built at almost every site we visited!
However, we found that there are still challenges with regards to efficient farm management and production practises. Providing dedicated support to our clients through regular visits from our local representative, in continuous consultation with Aller Aqua Research, is a service that many of our clients greatly appreciate.
Tailor-made Q&A sessions helped many of our clients better understand gaps in their day-to-day operations and helped improve their farming foundation. As a result of our continuous efforts, we observe a resulting increase in our client’s production efficiency and profitability, which shows us that we are truly growing together.

PIONEERING SPOTTED WOLFFISH FARMING THROUGH KNOWLEDGE SHARING
This week, we had the opportunity to visit two of our partners working at the frontier of farmed spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) at different life-stages, with a strong background in both research at Akvaplan Niva and farmed experience at Amar Seafood.

Spotted wolffish is known for its high potential as a farmed species, with high growth, even at high densities, no aggressive behavior, little disease challenges, and high slaughter yield. As a fish feed producer, we at Aller Aqua want to be a hands-on development partner. We are there to ask the right questions, understand species and site-specific needs, and turn insights into practical feed improvements.

These visits gave us valuable new perspectives and reinforced something we strongly believe in, real progress happens through open collaboration, knowledge sharing, and growing together. With these learnings, we are building a strong baseline for continued cooperation, focused on developing a suitable, sustainable feed concept that supports robust performance while keeping responsible production as long-term goals.

Follow us on our exciting journey together with these partners in the future of farmed spotted wolffish.

800KM OF TEST FEED, 10 YEARS OF COLLABORATION

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the close partnership between Aller Aqua Research and the ttz in Bremerhaven, Germany. Throughout the last decade we have processed hundreds of raw materials, produced 230 million feed pellets, exchanged ideas, and grown together by overcoming challenges.
This comprehensive collaboration has resulted in continuously evolving feed solutions and helped Aller Aqua Research to develop concepts and functional feeds that enhance fish health while optimising economic efficiency in production.
On the occasion of this special milestone, we teamed up with Tobias Fitzel, Competence Field Manager for Food Technology at the ttz, to summarize and reflect on our shared journey. ALLER AQUA's RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS PRESENTED AT THE FORUM ALLERUM

Mid of March – time for the Forum Allerum in Ustka, Poland. This year, it was an honor to present our latest research milestones addressing faeces engineering, radical scavengers, and the TEA (TRACE ELEMENTS ADJUSTED) concept, which ensure the adaptation of a broad complex of trace elements towards the needs of aquaculture species as well as the optimal performance under challenging environmental conditions. I am very proud on these research achievements leveraging our feed to the next level.

OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH HAVLAND CONTINUES TO DRIVE INNOVATION IN COD PRODUCTION.

Let’s talk cod! We recently completed a new sampling of cod in RAS as part of our fruitful partnership with Havland. By developing cod feed specifically for land-based production in RAS, we aim to find solutions to some of the key challenges in traditional cod aquaculture – such as early maturation and escape in sea-based systems.

This work is essential for advancing cod farming in RAS, strengthening land-based production, and supporting a more sustainable future for the industry. Through collaboration and shared expertise, we strive to improve growth performance, welfare and long-term sustainability. Aller Aqua is proud to contribute to this development, bringing cod production onto land.

NEW DEVELOPMENT IN HALIBUT FEED WITH STERLING HALIBUT

Our work together with Sterling Halibut continues. In our current trial, we are continuing the investigation of a combination of land-based by-products and insect meal. These innovative raw materials represent an important step towards creating sustainable feed solutions for the future of aquaculture in Norway.

We have previously tested this combination, but we are committed to refining the balance to ensure optimal fish growth and welfare. This effort supports Norway’s social mission of driving sustainability in aquaculture and reducing environmental impact.

We are proud to run these trials in close collaboration with our long-standing partner, Sterling Halibut. Together, through innovation and shared commitment, we are shaping a more sustainable future for the industry. Follow our progress as we will finalize this trial next year.

EDUCATION AS AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE: ALLER AQUA RESEARCH STRENGTHENS THE INDUSTRY THROUGH TRAINING AND SUPPORT

Since its foundation, Aller Aqua Research has consistently dedicated itself to training young people, demonstrating long-term responsibility for the industry. Through practical programs, we are not only creating opportunities for the next generation but are strengthening the innovative capacity of fisheries and aquaculture as a whole.
Young talents contribute creativity and enthusiasm, from which Aller Aqua Research directly benefits by gaining fresh impulses for research and development. This creates a sustainable cycle where education and company growth go hand in hand.
Support from the EU and the State of Schleswig-Holstein through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme 2021-2027 is therefore a meaningful and future-oriented investment. Aller Aqua Research proves that investing in education and young talent benefits not only individuals but advances the entire sector. This makes the company a worthy recipient of support and a driving force for the sustainable development of aquaculture.
