Our First Speaker is Prof. Dr. Ulrich Klein ๐จโ๐. He obtained his PhD in 1981 while working at the MPIfR. After doing research at the neighbouring astronomical institute, he obtained his habilitation from the University of Bonn in 1987.
He then held a permanent position at the MPIfR in the group of Prof. Richard Wielebinski. In 1989, he obtained a professorship from Bonn University at the Radioastronomisches Institut, which he held until his retirement. The focus of his research has been on the ISM and on galaxies ๐. Besides research, teaching has always been his biggest passion, which he still enjoys by giving public talks to laymen about the latest discoveries in astronomy ๐. Over the past ten years, he has collected a large amount of data on galaxies over a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Using the information in the FITS headers, he can produce precise and rather telling overlays onto optical images, which he obtains at his own observatory ๐ฐ (image on second slide). This will be introduced in his talk Galaxy overlays ( in english ). He will present a bunch of examples from his large collection, including single galaxies, galaxy pairs, groups, and clusters.
