Who we are

ISC3 is a new international centre promoting and developing sustainable chemistry solutions world-wide. Chemistry is facing the biggest challenge in its history: Basically, it has to reinvent itself in order to progress towards sustainable chemistry and a circular economy. This implies new business opportunities, new jobs, and a key contribution to achieve the UN Sustainable Developme

nt Goals. The ISC3 is committed to shape this transformation in cooperation with all stakeholders. ISC3 is a globally acting centre, multi-stakeholder platform and think tank. It manages a knowledge platform and a network of experts, offers training and support for implementation especially for developing countries, carries out innovation scouting activities to discover new technologies, processes and business models. It is a partner for industry and politics as well as for the civil society and research and connects different stakeholders in order to jointly develop new solutions for climate protection, energy generation, mobility and food supply. more

The ISC3 was established in May 2017 by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as a contribution to the international transformation towards sustainable chemistry and is presently being hosted by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). The ISC3 Headquarter is located in the UN-City of Bonn, Germany. The centre has established a Research Hub at Leuphana University, Lüneburg and an Innovation Hub at DECHEMA, Frankfurt a.M.

Without (formerly Without by Ashaya) is turning so far "unrecyclable" plastic waste — think chip packets and mixed textiles — into high-quality materials, using a low-temperature, solvent-free process. Along the way, they're also formalizing jobs for former waste pickers in India, multiplying their incomes in the process.

Since being named ISC3 Start-up of the Month in 2023, they've launched a demonstration plant in Pune, filed eight patents, become a Certified B Corp, and picked up awards from Unilever and L'Oréal for the world's first 100% recycled bottle made from waste packaging.

Proof that Sustainable Chemistry solutions can scale — and that sustainability and dignity for workers don't have to be a trade-off. 🌍

🌟 Start-up of the Month: Afya Ya Mnyama Digital! 🌟

In Tanzania, protecting livestock means protecting a family’s livelihood. Afya Ya Mnyama Digital is helping farmers do both − by making livestock health monitoring smarter, earlier, and more sustainable.

Tanzanian start-up Afya Ya Mnyama Digital has developed a smart ear tag sensor paired with the Mnyama Check Platform, an AI-powered livestock health monitoring application that enables farmers to monitor their animals in real time. By detecting diseases at an early stage, the system helps reduce livestock losses. It also tracks reproductive behaviour, providing accurate documentation that supports herd management while reducing the need for manual observation.

A second key aspect of the innovation is the environmental design of the ear tags. Developed according to eco-design principles, they are designed for recyclability, repairability, and a long service life, reducing waste compared with conventional livestock monitoring devices.

With its solution, Afya Ya Mnyama Digital combines digital innovation with environmental sustainability, supporting more efficient and responsible livestock farming.

The Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency and the International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) have announced "Spotlights 2026: Shaping the Chemical Transition Together," a two-day conference taking place 14–15 October 2026 in Dessau-Roßlau, Germany.

The event will bring together representatives from industry, policymaking, academia, finance and civil society to address how Europe's chemical industry can remain globally competitive and innovative while operating within planetary boundaries — covering sustainable feedstocks, circularity, chemicals management and the regulatory frameworks needed to scale innovation.

🌟 Start-up of the Month: Ecolyte! 🌟
Headlines about lithium ion batteries overheating or even catching fire have been hard to ignore. 🔥🔋

Ecolyte, a women-led start-up from Azerbaijan, has developed a non-flammable electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. 🔋✨

The electrolyte is non-toxic and exists in a gel state, preventing leakage by design. It combines high energy density with excellent heat tolerance while delivering high performance at a lower cost. The company achieves this by relying on proven, scalable manufacturing methods that can be integrated into existing battery production processes.

Through its innovation, Ecolyte aims to make lithium-ion batteries safer, more sustainable, and more affordable. By reducing the use of hazardous materials and supporting greener battery production, the start-up seeks to improve both environmental sustainability and human safety while contributing to wider access to electric vehicle technology.

How can Sustainable Chemistry strengthen Europe’s competitiveness while advancing a nature-positive economy?

As part of EU Green Week, ISC3 and BioökonomieREVIER brought together representatives from European institutions, industry, research and innovation to explore this question.

In alphabetical order by surname, the roundtable featured Eric de Deckere, Thaïs Leray, Pilar Llorente Ruiz de Azua, Rupert Posner, Rupert Taylor, Peter Wehrheim and Monique Wekking. Additional perspectives were shared via testimonials by Marianne Kettunen, Emma Strömberg and Jacqueline Vaessen.

The discussion highlighted the importance of turning innovation into industrial deployment, developing resilient value chains and strengthening international cooperation.

Advancing Sustainable Chemistry at United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)

ISC3 was proud to contribute to the UN Chemicals and Waste Management Study Programme in Geneva, delivering the session "Sustainable Chemistry: From Principles to Practice."

Through real-world case studies like ClimEtSan-OnTheGround and AppCyclers, participants explored how Sustainable Chemistry principles can address today's policy and innovation challenges in chemicals and waste management.

From June 14 to June 18, 2027, Achema will take place in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. As the world forum and leading show for Life Science and Process Industries, it provides a unique platform for exchange between research, development, and industrial practice.

Held alongside the exhibition, the ACHEMA Congress offers researchers and industry experts the opportunity to present their latest findings, contribute new perspectives to the field, and engage with an international audience. The program focuses on topics such as decarbonisation, artificial intelligence, modular production, industrial cybersecurity, and the integration of laboratory and production environments. 🎉 Congratulations to SNI (Sociedad Nacional de Industrias) on 130 years of industrial leadership in Peru!

To mark this milestone, ISC3 and SNI have signed a Letter of Intention extending their partnership through 2028 — deepening cooperation on Sustainable Chemistry and industrial transformation.

Since teaming up, ISC3 and SNI have delivered a Power-to-Chemicals Training of Trainers workshop, a National Dialogue Forum on Sustainable Chemistry, and joint participation at Expo Industria — bringing together industry, government, academia and vocational education.

🌟 Start-up of the Month: Ovomas! 🌟

What if eggshell waste could become a high-value pharmaceutical product? 🥚♻️

Ovomas, a start-up from Ecuador, is making it happen. Originally a liquid egg producer, the company now transforms eggshell waste into high-purity calcium citrate, nutraceutical capsules, and vitamin-enriched gummies − turning a disposal problem into a circular business model.

Their calcium citrate offers a locally produced, affordable alternative to imported supplements, helping address conditions like osteoporosis. And by keeping eggshells out of landfills, Ovomas also cuts methane emissions, reduces aquifer contamination, and avoids the environmental toll of conventional limestone-based calcium production.
