The ISC3 – International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre – wants to support the global breakthrough of sustainable chemistry.

Who we are

ISC3 is a new international centre promoting and developing sustainable chemistry solutions world-wide. Chemistry is facing the biggest challenge in its history: Basically, it has to reinvent itself in order to progress towards sustainable chemistry and a circular economy. This implies new business opportunities, new jobs, and a key contribution to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The ISC3 is committed to shape this transformation in cooperation with all stakeholders. ISC3 is a globally acting centre, multi-stakeholder platform and think tank. It manages a knowledge platform and a network of experts, offers training and support for implementation especially for developing countries, carries out innovation scouting activities to discover new technologies, processes and business models. It is a partner for industry and politics as well as for the civil society and research and connects different stakeholders in order to jointly develop new solutions for climate protection, energy generation, mobility and food supply. more

The ISC3 was established in May 2017 by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as a contribution to the international transformation towards sustainable chemistry and is presently being hosted by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). The ISC3 Headquarter is located in the UN-City of Bonn, Germany. The centre has established a Research Hub at Leuphana University, Lüneburg and an Innovation Hub at DECHEMA, Frankfurt a.M.

We’ve arrived in Dublin for the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2026!

From 19 to 22 October, policymakers, researchers, businesses and international organisations are meeting here to discuss how the bioeconomy can deliver on sustainability, resilience and inclusive development.

The focus: the Global South. Together with Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), NatureFinance and the European Commission (DG INTPA), we’re co-organising the workshop “Scaling the Bioeconomy in the Global South: Enabling Conditions, Regional Cooperation and Global Partnerships.”

In Lab 2, Fiona Hammann-Wiese and Paola Bustillos Castillo from ISC3 will explore how fragmented markets can become regional and global value webs. We’ll look at what actually stands in the way of scaling, and what it takes to get private-sector actors on board.

🌟 Start-up of the Month: TSR Innovations! 🌟

Europe relies heavily on imported rare-earth materials, while valuable resources from e-waste streams often remain unrecovered. TSR Innovations is helping to change that.

⚡ German start-up TSR Innovations has developed a long-loop mechanochemical recycling process that recovers rare-earth materials from waste sources, including electric vehicle motors and production waste, and reintroduces them into the manufacturing cycle. The technology operates with low energy and chemical requirements, helping reduce waste ♻️, conserve critical resources 🌍 and support a more circular European supply chain.

🧪 By combining innovative chemistry with circular-economy principles, TSR Innovations contributes to a more sustainable and resilient future.

Without (formerly Without by Ashaya) is turning so far "unrecyclable" plastic waste — think chip packets and mixed textiles — into high-quality materials, using a low-temperature, solvent-free process. Along the way, they're also formalizing jobs for former waste pickers in India, multiplying their incomes in the process.

Since being named ISC3 Start-up of the Month in 2023, they've launched a demonstration plant in Pune, filed eight patents, become a Certified B Corp, and picked up awards from Unilever and L'Oréal for the world's first 100% recycled bottle made from waste packaging.

Proof that Sustainable Chemistry solutions can scale — and that sustainability and dignity for workers don't have to be a trade-off. 🌍

🌟 Start-up of the Month: Afya Ya Mnyama Digital! 🌟

In Tanzania, protecting livestock means protecting a family’s livelihood. Afya Ya Mnyama Digital is helping farmers do both − by making livestock health monitoring smarter, earlier, and more sustainable.

Tanzanian start-up Afya Ya Mnyama Digital has developed a smart ear tag sensor paired with the Mnyama Check Platform, an AI-powered livestock health monitoring application that enables farmers to monitor their animals in real time. By detecting diseases at an early stage, the system helps reduce livestock losses. It also tracks reproductive behaviour, providing accurate documentation that supports herd management while reducing the need for manual observation.

A second key aspect of the innovation is the environmental design of the ear tags. Developed according to eco-design principles, they are designed for recyclability, repairability, and a long service life, reducing waste compared with conventional livestock monitoring devices.

With its solution, Afya Ya Mnyama Digital combines digital innovation with environmental sustainability, supporting more efficient and responsible livestock farming.

The Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency and the International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) have announced "Spotlights 2026: Shaping the Chemical Transition Together," a two-day conference taking place 14–15 October 2026 in Dessau-Roßlau, Germany.

The event will bring together representatives from industry, policymaking, academia, finance and civil society to address how Europe's chemical industry can remain globally competitive and innovative while operating within planetary boundaries — covering sustainable feedstocks, circularity, chemicals management and the regulatory frameworks needed to scale innovation.

Participation is free of charge; places are limited.
