Who we are

ISC3 is a new international centre promoting and developing sustainable chemistry solutions world-wide. Chemistry is facing the biggest challenge in its history: Basically, it has to reinvent itself in order to progress towards sustainable chemistry and a circular economy. This implies new business opportunities, new jobs, and a key contribution to achieve the UN Sustainable Developme

nt Goals. The ISC3 is committed to shape this transformation in cooperation with all stakeholders. ISC3 is a globally acting centre, multi-stakeholder platform and think tank. It manages a knowledge platform and a network of experts, offers training and support for implementation especially for developing countries, carries out innovation scouting activities to discover new technologies, processes and business models. It is a partner for industry and politics as well as for the civil society and research and connects different stakeholders in order to jointly develop new solutions for climate protection, energy generation, mobility and food supply. more

The ISC3 was established in May 2017 by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as a contribution to the international transformation towards sustainable chemistry and is presently being hosted by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). The ISC3 Headquarter is located in the UN-City of Bonn, Germany. The centre has established a Research Hub at Leuphana University, Lüneburg and an Innovation Hub at DECHEMA, Frankfurt a.M.

🌟 Start-up of the Month: Environalgae! 🌟
Ninad Gujarathi

Indian start-up Environalgae develops and implements microalgae-based wastewater treatment plants tailored to the specific waste streams of each customer. The process generates nutrient-rich algal biomass, which the company converts into products for agriculture, aquaculture, and animal feed applications. 🦠💧🌱
Powered primarily by sunlight, the treatment process requires relatively low energy input. It is also inherently “clean-tech”: while the microalgae clean the wastewater, they simultaneously produce oxygen. At the same time, pollutants in the water serve as nutrients for the microorganisms, enabling further biomass growth. This approach reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional wastewater treatment while lowering operational costs and having the potential to significantly decrease the carbon footprint of such facilities.

Power-to-Chemicals is no longer a distant concept — it's part of the conversation in Peru's chemical industry.

On 19–20 May, professionals from companies, universities, public institutions and international cooperation gathered for the Training of Trainers on Power-to-Chemicals and Sustainable Chemistry, organised by the Sociedad Nacional de Industrias and ISC3.

Across two days of exchange, hands-on exercises and a technical visit to Proquinsa, one message stood out: a cleaner, safer and more sustainable chemical industry needs both innovation and people ready to drive it.

Because transformation doesn't start with technology alone. It starts with people.

A great Global Start-up Service workshop yesterday!

We hosted our online workshop "Biodegradability of Chemicals" in the frame of our Global Start-up Service. A huge thank you to Prof. Klaus Kammerer for sharing his expertise in such a clear and practical way!

💡 The key takeaway: Chemicals that don't degrade persist in the environment, travel widely, and affect ecosystems and human health. Biodegradability is a mandatory part of chemical authorisation – and for start-ups, considering it early is not just smart, it's essential for building sustainable, future-proof products.

🚀 Missed the session? No worries — the recording will soon be available in our exclusive online library, accessible only to members of our Global Start-up Service (GSS).

Join a growing network of ambitious start-ups and get access to valuable insights, expert sessions, and member-only resources.

🌟 Start-up of the Month: Rôbalôtô Togo! 🌟
What if plastic waste could power education?
Togo-based start-up Rôbalôtô is turning that vision into reality by combining technology, recycling, and education to build a more circular economy. ♻️🎒

Their approach is both smart and impactful:
• Data-driven recycling – Smart bins installed in schools track the most commonly used plastics, enabling tailored waste management solutions.
• Circular marketplace – Schools can sell collected plastic directly to recycling companies, creating both environmental and economic value.
• Education first – Through “environmental clubs,” students learn hands-on waste sorting and recycling practices, becoming ambassadors for change.

But Rôbalôtô goes even further.
By transforming plastic waste into solar-powered backpacks, the company helps students in rural areas access light after dark − unlocking more time for learning and opportunity. 🎒💡
A powerful reminder that innovation can solve multiple challenges at once: waste, education, and energy access.
