A more complete view of human biology often begins by looking from more than one angle.

At HUPO 2026, our colleagues shared how mass spectrometry and Olink® proximity extension assay technology can work together to advance proteomics research. Mass spectrometry enables deep, high-throughput discovery, while Olink provides highly sensitive, targeted protein measurement. Together with genomic and health data, these complementary approaches can help researchers uncover insights that might otherwise remain hidden.

Initial findings from the PRECISE-SG100K study, presented at the conference, demonstrate that potential at population scale. Analysis of the first 10,000 participant samples identified more than 2,400 genetic-protein associations not previously reported across 12 reference studies, expanding the evidence available to investigate disease pathways, potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Thermo Fisher was also recognized with the 2026 HUPO Science & Technology Award for advancing targeted quantitation through the Thermo Scientific™ Stellar™ mass spectrometer. By bringing high sensitivity, selectivity, speed and intelligent data acquisition together in one platform, Stellar MS supports reproducible quantitation across tens to thousands of surrogate peptides. Automated workflows also help reduce method-development time, enabling researchers to move more efficiently from biomarker discovery to verification.

This recognition reflects our commitment to helping scientists generate high-quality proteomics data with greater confidence and efficiency. We’re grateful to our colleagues and to the researchers whose questions and collaboration continue to move the field forward.

What can ice more than a million years old tell us about Earth’s future?

At the University of Tasmania, Brett Paull and his team are analyzing extraordinarily rare Antarctic ice core samples to uncover chemical clues to our planet’s climate history.

Using our analytical instruments, the researchers can detect trace compounds preserved in the ice cores that reveal evidence of past volcanic eruptions, forest fires, changes in ocean productivity and shifts in the atmosphere.

Some of these samples could date back more than 1 million years. By looking deeper into Earth’s past, scientists can gain new insights into how our climate has changed over time, and what that history could help us understand about its future.

Miles folded hundreds of origami structures in his family’s living room. Tina experimented with household and natural materials to filter water. Shanya taught herself to code a fire-detection device from the kitchen table.

Three different ideas. Three Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge winners. And three reminders that scientific discovery can start with a question, wherever you are and with the materials you have around you.

For 2025 winner Miles Wu, that meant spending 250 hours testing how the Miura-Ori origami fold could be made stronger and lighter, research inspired by its potential use in portable shelters for people displaced by natural disasters.

For 2024 winner Tina Jin, it meant developing a prototype water filter that can be operated by virtually anyone, anywhere, after learning about the global lack of access to clean drinking water.

And for 2023 winner Shanya Gill, it meant turning a question about fire safety into a working device that uses a thermal camera to identify unsafe heat sources.

The Thermo Fisher JIC, a program of Society for Science, shows middle school students across the U.S. that meaningful STEM research can begin closer to home than they might think. Automation is changing what’s possible in the lab. AI could take it further.

At Lab of the Future Europe in Amsterdam, Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Mark Fish, Vice President and General Manager of Digital Science & Automation Solutions, explored how laboratories can move beyond automating individual tasks toward increasingly connected and autonomous workflows, with AI helping to enable that transition.

The opportunity is to bring instruments, software, data and people together more intelligently to help scientists access better information, make faster decisions and translate those decisions into action in the lab.

Mark described the lab of the future as a connected environment where insights can inform physical lab work and what happens in the lab can help inform what comes next.

But technology alone won’t get us there. Open ecosystems, trusted data and collaboration across scientists, customers and technology partners will be essential, with scientists remaining at the center.

Together, we can help build laboratories that accelerate scientific progress while enabling scientists to focus on the decisions where their expertise matters most.

A more complete view of the proteome can reveal biology that might otherwise go unseen.

Initial findings from the PRECISE-SG100K study identified thousands of previously unreported connections between genetic variation and protein levels, giving researchers new evidence to investigate disease biology, biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets.

Presented at the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) World Congress, the findings show the value of combining Thermo Fisher’s mass spectrometry and Olink® technologies with genomic and health data to study human biology from complementary perspectives.

Together with Precision Health Research, Singapore (PRECISE), we’re applying this approach at population scale to uncover insights that can inform future research.
